    Post Apocalypse Settings

Not really. I have been very close to some really, really bad stuff in real life and I am not the least bit interested in misery porn. Like I said: to each their own. But "realistic" apocalyptic RPGs hold about as little interest for me as a SAW simulator.

To each their own, but for the life of me I can't imagine how that would be fun.

Fans of long series of big novels, sound off!

If it is a quality series, I am okay with a lot of books (The Expanse has 9 novels plus novellas, for example) but I am not so patient with massive tomes, especially ones that don't go anywhere. I listened to the first 2 and a half volumes of the Stormlight Archives (totally about 120 hours)...

I like that idea. Especially for a supers game where death is almost always a temporary story beat.

Which "Tactical" TTRPG Would Work Best As An X-Com Like?

I own that game but I don't recall it having a strong gridded tactical play element.

I want useful and detailed out of combat systems too. 5E absolutely doesn't have those.

Neat! Designers and Dragons are among my favorite RPG-related books, and they are surprisingly compelling audiobooks.

    Sell me on Savage Worlds

The easiest way to encourage players to try different solutions is to present them with novel problems. After they are done smashing at the problem with the old tools, they will (usually) try new things.

    What System(s) Should I Suggest?

I don't know what it's Foundry support is like, but it seems a perfect opportunity to try Draw Steel.

    Sell me on Savage Worlds

I try not to worry about this stuff. Players get to decide what they play, and if some prefer a "comfort build" all the time, that is fine by me. But if you want to encourage them to branch out, tie some edges and hinderances directly to the setting and make them more optimal or at least...

Which "Tactical" TTRPG Would Work Best As An X-Com Like?

I still think the era of VTT play can let us find a middle ground here, where you can have a lot of crunch that doesn't actually slow play down so much. Well, in this case, becasue I am looking to do a very specific thing: an X-Com like TTRPG. I love Battletech when I can play it with a...

D&D 5E (2024) Class and Subclass Design: What Works

The question here isn't really about how to fix the class/subclass system of 5E 2024, but how to use it within its design parameters.

Which "Tactical" TTRPG Would Work Best As An X-Com Like?

The goal is not to make it hard, but to make tactical, positioning based combat important and fun, and to make the "downtime" elements of the genre worthwhile and meaningful choices.

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

In my experience, having run SD both on Fantasy Grounds a bunch and in person a bunch, Shadowdark is best when at the table using Theater of the Mind exploration and a quick, "not especially to scale" sketch of the battlefield for combat.

Which "Tactical" TTRPG Would Work Best As An X-Com Like?

To be more specific, I am not looking to play X-Com. I have my own setting and threat force in mind. But point taken: it might be easier to crunchy up certain aspects of SWADE.
