Arena fight - need a mechanic for crowd-pleasing combat bonuses!

Lost Soul's post just reminded me that Dragonborn have a breath weapon (duh)with a variable keyword. Maybe they have setup the arena with different hazards that are keyed to different breath weapons. And their team is hand picked so that they have a Gladiator with Rainbow-black pools of oil->...

Arena fight - need a mechanic for crowd-pleasing combat bonuses!

BLOOODDD - Yeah some mechanics when the crowd see blood would work and would give a morale boost to the first to draw blood, the first kill, the first crit, .. etc. Maybe, it could work like achievements in a video game and the players gain victory points. The more victory point accumulated...

No more WotC Star Wars site

Interesting discussion. Not to hijack the thread, but does anyone have any good links on how to fix Saga issues? I'm going to running Dawn of Defiance as my first dip into Saga rules later in the year. I'm goign to start making some character to familiarise myself with the rules, it will be...

D&D 4E Is It Time to Look at 4E Again?

Gort: I think I should have wrote: "Accidentally" lethal. The DMG guidelines are fairly transparent, so DM's should be able to create challenging encounters without accidentally creating killer ones. Saying that, Retreater mentioned using kruthiks*, these beastie's really are PC killers. I've...

Essentials: Magic Item Rarity Explained, it's actually good!

It will be at the DM's discretion, but - as a player - you could use the book to quest for items and - in game - look to track down ones that you covet. I don't want magic items to disappear back behind the DM screen, I think that is a step backwards.

I wouldn't wear used leather armour. It would be all sweaty and stuff.

Essentials: Magic Item Rarity Explained, it's actually good!

One of the key pieces here is that, by default, Rare and Uncommon magic items are not for sale to the PCs. So we know only know what merchants will pay for them; we have no idea at what they will sell. As a DM you can implement whatever you see fit. I concur :D.. And now I need to put my...

Essentials: Magic Item Rarity Explained, it's actually good!

Maybe i'm picking him up wrong, but i love the new model. It fits perfectly with DND and - as you mentioned - with the types of quests that are a staple of Fantasy literature. This is definitely a step forward. And as Dice4hire mentioned we don't know how much the vendors sell uncommon and...

Essentials: Magic Item Rarity Explained, it's actually good!

I believe he is arguing that the Rare items will be hard to shift so a buyer will only offer 20% and the common items will be easy to shift and so should be bought by the middle man for 90%-100% of their listed price. All this is based on real world retail economics. I may be wrong but I...

Essentials: Magic Item Rarity Explained, it's actually good!

You've just argued against your own point. But I suppose it depends who you label as the Salesman. For Rare items the market is determining the price since they are so hard to make, so the 100% markup makes sense, someone is looking to buy any of these power items. Anyway I wouldn't apply...

Or to give some guidelines about what items are considered rare and uncommon - similar to the points listed in the articles above - and leave it to DM discretion.

D&D 4E Is It Time to Look at 4E Again?

We need more information on how you design such killer combats. It is quiet hard to be so lethal using the encounter guidelines from the DMG.

    Essentials - calling a spade a spade

Was the game fundamentally different when PHBIII came out or when any of the splat books did? Essentials is just a bunch of new classes - they break out of the existing power structure, but they are additive and (hopefully) balanced content - and some errata and new rules. It is fundamentally...
