D&D 4E WotC, Please stop the deliberate obfuscation of 4e concepts in 5e!!

As I have seen now via several playtest leaks and various columns and comments by WotC, they are importing ideas and concepts from 4e, but appear to be deliberating obfuscating the terminology and descriptions. Seriously, its silly and stupid. I can only imagine that the purpose of doing so is...

Throwing down the Tyranny of the Spellcaster.

Instead of nerfing casters, I'd rather see melee classes boosted to match. Tome of Battle style! :) Then I can have my cake and eat it too. ;)

    The Legend of Korra

Nickelodeon posted first two episodes of Korra online! First two episodes of The Legend of Korra are available to watch now online courtesy of Nickelodeon. Legend of Korra: Korra Nation So far the first eps are awesome! The original Avatar: The Last Airbender is my second favorite animated...

D&D 4E 4e books when DDN comes out

I highly doubt it. There are already 4e books that have gone out of print and WotC hasn't reprinted them and with 5e coming, probably won't. Aside from the original PHB1, DMG1, and MM1, I'm pretty sure everything prior to 2011 is out of print, except for Essentials related books. Some of those...

D&D Blog: Turn Undead and Monster Weaknesses

I like the image of the cleric surrounded by a horde of undead, who lifts up his holy symbol and in a thunderous voice defiantly calls upon their deity to strike down these abominations. The undead reel back, feebly trying to ward themselves against it, but are quickly consumed and blown to ash...

5ing my own E...who's with me?!

Not really. I'm basically stripping out the entire powers system and uniform class structure altogether and importing about half of Pathfinder in its place. Not a small change.

5ing my own E...who's with me?!

My ideal edition would include the following elements: From 4e: point buy stats, static HP, the unified bonus progression for attacks and defenses, the core combat system pretty much whole hog with movement powers made optional. 4e monsters pretty much as is with again movement powers made...

    Something Awful leak.

Being away all weekend and reading that 5e "leak" fills me with absolute horror. I hope the released playtest looks nothing like the rubbish I read in that link. I pray this is an elaborate troll.

Idle Musings: Inverted Interrupts, Focus Fire, and Combat Flow

I don't think you necessarily need a whole mechanical framework built arounding being engaged or not. Simply allow players to spend actions to achieve certain combat benefits and you achieve the same effect. If you use Action points as the currency of combat, you can use them as a sort of cross...

    D&D 5E (2014) The math of D&D Next; a moderating proposal

Yes, the default hit percentage when all things are equal (equally good offense vs. equally good defense) should be around 65-75%. Not 50%. A player should on average only miss an opponent of their level 1 out of every 3 or 4 rounds.

    Rule of Three: March 13

I agree and disagree with this. A rules system should be robust enough to quickly and easily adjudicate creative player actions and should encourage such actions. But in the long run, I expect players, even the creative ones, to put forth some effort in actually learning and understanding the...

Highest total bonus at level one to a d20 roll

Assuming we want to keep bonuses symmetrical with 25% gap, or +5 points on a d20 for easy, moderate, difficult, and you go with the original post of DC 10 being say Moderate, then a trained PC with the appropriate stat for that skill at a high level, should make that Moderate DC roll 90 to 100%...

    Rule of Three: March 13

I would say that's a fair assessment, with the caveat that 3e can swing to extremes depending on the class makeup and rules expertise of the players. Lots of spell casters slow things down, but an all melee group is probably pretty fast.

Highest total bonus at level one to a d20 roll

I think this entire thread is based on a tail wagging the dog premise. Trying to design the game around what a bonus a 1st level PC should have is completely backwards. First, for skills decide what the average success or failure rate a first level PC should have with trained vs. untrained...

    Rule of Three: March 13

Agreed. Main contributors to 3e combat length are multiple attack rolls per PC coming from different sources, two weapon fighting, crit confirm rolls, iterative attacks at higher levels, casters running turns for one or more summoned monsters, not to the mention the DM running sometimes multiple...

    Rule of Three: March 13

If 4e combats are taking too long thats a problem with the players and the DM wasting too much time. When my group was prepping to compete in the Ultimate Dungeon Delve, which is a timed convention event, we really examined 4e combat and how long it should take to play through a turn. We...

    D&D 4E Simple 5e Healing that reconciles pre-4e and post-4e HP styles

Personally, I think camping in D&D is way too frequent. I feel its too heavily tied to not only encounter based attrition, but also to the recovery method of far too many character resources. I'd rather just keep exploring the dungeon and only camp when it makes sense from a narrative standpoint...

    D&D 4E Simple 5e Healing that reconciles pre-4e and post-4e HP styles

I also agree that players shouldn't be able to metagame the mechanic such that fireballing the rats knowing it won't kill their companion is the best option. But I don't know if its possible cover every corner case with rules, nor do I think the game should. I like games that has a base rule...

    D&D 4E Simple 5e Healing that reconciles pre-4e and post-4e HP styles

Ah, I see what you are saying. I would use the 4e model for death saves. Essentially, in 4e your failed death saves do not reset until after you take an extended rest (i.e. camp). So if you fail a save, then are healed back to positive HP but then go down again, you don't get three new saves...

    D&D 4E Simple 5e Healing that reconciles pre-4e and post-4e HP styles

I agree, but the problem with a simple HP system is some people will be upset at mixing warlord healing with clerical healing and having them both heal the same thing. I'm cool with that, but I know some aren't, thus this system. But yeah, it should probably be optional to keep the base game...
