    Tom Swift on CW

On general principle I am obligated to be interested in a show that turns Tom Swift, Jr into a cross between Tony Stark and Little Nas X. But I kinda forgot this was real. I've tuned out of the CW over the past few years. Maybe I'll watch the premiere? "Magic soap" doesn't sound like it's...

Critical Role "Exandria Unlimited: Calamity" Border Changes

I haven’t checked this out yet, but that Brennan guy just might be the best DM I’ve ever seen. I’m currently working my way through his Fantasy High campaign on YouTube.

    I knew that sounded familiar!

    Raised by Wolves, RIP.

I haven't finished the second season, but I'm kinda sad to see it go. Whatever its mistakes were, it was bold and bat... ahem... imaginative. Would have watched more of the Space Gospel of Ridley Scott, New Revised Intergalactic Version.

What are you reading in 2022?

Well I tried to read Nabokov's Ada, or Ardor. I bounced off of it hard, which surprised me a little because when I read Lolita and Pale Fire I didn't find them difficult. Oh wait, I was decades younger! Never mind. I'll try again someday. I had no idea it technically qualifies as sci-fi (by...

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

The consequences for not torturing the child are more severe in the SNW episode than in the original short story, but it's the same basic thought experiment. But was the culture wrong for designing such a system in the first place? Were there other options that didn't require the sacrifice of a...

Star Trek Strange New Worlds, what did you think?

This was totally “The One Who Beamed Away From Omelas”.

    Obi-Wan Kenobi (spoilers)

The speeders look too much like A-wings to me. I had the same problem with them in Empire. They actually call them T-47s in the episode, but when they first appeared on screen I though they were star fighters that jumped in. A like of dialogue about flying below their scanners would have been...

    D&D General Testing Players

It think this is as subjective as it gets. You should 'test' a group in the manner they enjoy being tested. For some people this means tactical combat challenges. For others, riddles and Sudoku and the like. And then there's the lot who want a Night at the Improv! (that me).

    Obi-Wan Kenobi (spoilers)

I think those craft were like the snowspeeders in Empire and the implication was they flew in 'below the radar'. Of course that would mean there weren't spacecraft, and they skipped the scenes showing how they got to that moon. Yeah, it was a little confusing.

    Obi-Wan Kenobi (spoilers)

OK, the fourth episode was fantastic.

    Ms Marvel trailer

From the trailers I got an almost Scott Pilgrim movie vibe, but the first episode was much more Muslim Lin-Manuel Miranda directing a superhero joint. That’s the highest praise I can deliver. Absolutely delightful.

    Orville: New Horizons (Spoilers)

True. 'Homage, with comedy' is probably a better description. Though it does veer pretty close to parody in some places, ie the Moclans being a parody of TNG-era Klingons.

    Orville: New Horizons (Spoilers)

Season 1 can be skipped. Season 2, not so much. If it helps, the second season makes it much clearer that The Orville is less a TNG parody and more of a TNG continuation, with some of DS9's story arc dramatics thrown in for good measure.

    Obi-Wan Kenobi (spoilers)

What I meant was Jim Kirk had many adventures where we all knew he'd survive to the end credits. "Stakes are a relative thing when you're talking about TV series and media franchises. It's why Game of Thrones stood out so much - the folks you thought were protagonists could die. I'm looking...

    Obi-Wan Kenobi (spoilers)

In what way? Kirk didn't die until the first TNG movie, after his TV show and film series. Bond didn't... well, I actually haven't see the last one, but I assume in that one!

    Obi-Wan Kenobi (spoilers)

Yeah, for me the most compelling part of the show so far is Obi-Wan wrestling with PTSD (and the feelings he had for Padme?). When they raised the stakes in the traditional way for an adventure story by putting Vader on-screen, I found myself reaching for my iPad.
