D&D General 50 Years. The Least Popular Class Is......

It was brutal. Not only did high hit dice monster have great save, many of them had magic resistance! And in 2e, most high level spells were slow to cast and thus easier to interrupt. HP has been creeping up for a while. A 2e ogre had 19 hp on average. A 3e ogre had 29 hp. A 5e ogre has...

I can't speak about the 4e one, but I think making the bard a full caster was a mistake.

D&D General 50 Years. The Least Popular Class Is......

I played a gnome thief/illusionist in a high level 2e campaign. But I haven't played once since. The 5.5e illusionist looks preeety good I must say... but it still requires the right player/dm combo.

D&D General 50 Years. The Least Popular Class Is......

This in itself is a fascinating concept. (pardon me as I take a tangeant, I swear I will answer your main point in another post!) 2e (and 1e?) had saving throws based on the level of the target. The competence of the caster or the power of the spell had no impact (although the type of spell...

D&D 5E (2024) Temp HP - a hidden nerf to druids and others

... I don't want to read a 28 page thread about this to tease out if someone pointed out that not being able to benefit from other sources as easily in wild form was a nerf.

ah, thank you for elaborating, I see your point now. It still is quite the buff to the spell.

D&D 5E (2024) Temp HP - a hidden nerf to druids and others

It might have been obvious to you, but in all the new class review videos I've seen, no one has mentioned how the switch to temp hp was a nerf because it meant you couldn't benefit from other sources of temp hp as well as previously. I'm not saying I'm the first person to bring this up (maybe...

D&D 5E (2024) Temp HP - a hidden nerf to druids and others

I've noticed that 5.5 has a LOT of temp hp sources. I've also noticed that a number of "transformation" powers now work with temp hp. Druid wildshape and polymorph are two such examples. So in 5.0, say you have a moon druid wrecking stuff as some kind of big beast, or you're the rogue with...

    D&D 5E (2024) Agathys forever

But the rules do not use the word "lose". It just says "The spell ends early if you have no Temporary Hit Points." At no point, during the "switch", when receiving a temp HP boosting spell (such as polymorphe) do you have zero temp HP. the 2014 rules were very specific that the spell was...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thief Rogue / True Strike

That is a very good point - I think we'll have to wait for the DMG and more magic item rules to really know! reliably doing 2 sneak attacks/round is not "small" IMO.

    D&D 5E (2024) Thief Rogue / True Strike

Yes, that is the general rule. But remember, from the PHB: "Exceptions Supersede General Rules General rules govern each part of the game. For example, the combat rules tell you that melee attacks use Strength and ranged attacks use Dexterity. That’s a general rule, and a general rule is in...

    D&D 5E (2024) Thief Rogue / True Strike

I think you may have missunderstood? this isn't about getting sneak attack every round (something that should be almost a given given all the ways you can get one). Rather it's about a specific subclass getting TWO sneak attack/round.

D&D General Lifestyle, Resting, and Survival

I think you need to consider the impact this would have on travel, where the party has to rest in the wilderness. You also have to consider what "quality" of rest using various spells such as tiny hut. It seems it could get quite complicated quickly

    D&D 5E (2024) Thief Rogue / True Strike

While I am mostly enjoying this new edition, I'm finding a lot of these... "almost too good" combos. Considering how there clearly has been some oversights (I'm looking at you, conjure minor elemental!), I can't help but wonder if the designers intended for this to happen?

    D&D 5E (2024) Agathys forever

I do not agree with your first point. The spell says "The spell ends early if you have no Temporary Hit Points." When you get more temp HP from another source, yes they do not stack, they replace the existing temp HP. There is no point where you have "no temp HP". If you want to rule it...

I think it's very good if used properly (protect/stretch the temp HP so you can inflict the cold damage several times). But OMG awesome? I don't think so - in part because you need to put in the effort to make it work. It really depends on how often you can inflict the cold damage. Only...
