Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

The claim was "pretty much" which isn't 0%. And yes most are just not going to play that when they can play a custom background, get a background that better fits their backstory and has mechanics that work better with the feat. I am sure we will see a "Dragon Cult Follower" (custom...

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

The skills are not nearly as big a deal as the feats and ability bonuses. The ability bonuses in particular that make no logical sense at all since they are bonuses, not minimums or scores.

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

It is not this one thing that matters so much, it is that the background system is so screwed up. The best Monks are Sailors and the best Barbarians are Farmers and if you want to play something more traditional like an Acolyte or Sage for Monk or Guide or Hermit for Barbarian you are penalized...

Ah yes, changed from the playtest!

Well if your save is weak they are not going to often get Frightened. I don't get why it isn't "choose Wisdom, Charisma or Intelligence" like almost all of the other feats.

Because they make the stat bonuses part of the background. If the background was only about story (like it was in 2014) it would not be an issue.

Yeah I suppose Ranger is an ok option for that. I think Fighter is probably better though, despite having no caster level because you don't need the high Wisdom.

Paladin multiclass would be really tough - 13 Strength, 13 Charsima requirements and you are going to need max Dex and max Intelligence to make Bladesong effective. Ranger is a bit easier but I don't see the why. The Paladin is the exampleon why I hate the multiclass minimums. How cool would...

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

The new Background system is as screwed up as ever. Best example - Dragon Cultist Background which boosts Dexterity, Constitution and Intelligence and includes the Cult of the Dragon Initiate Origin Feat and of course that feat's main ability keys off Wisdom (and only Wisdom). 😖 This pretty...

D&D 5E (2024) Changes to the Command spell and its use at the table.

I think Tasha's Hideous laughter is better than Hold person on the same slot level now. Paralyzed is a more debilitating condition than Incapacitated and Prone, but being able to target one more enemy at any specific slot level overcomes that and some at most levels of casting.

yep ... or a Warhammer .... as long as you use it one-handed.

It is not a Wizard spell. It is Paladin, Bard, Cleric. You can spam it on a Wizard, or any caster, with feats of course. We have been spamming it for a year since 2024 came out and it is still fun. It is easily the most commonly cast offensive spell in our games and the most upcast spell...

The Bladesinger is very close to the UA. Main changes from TCE: Bladesong scales off of Intelligence per Long Rest - If you are maxing Intelligence it is better at most levels, worse at highest levels. If you are not maxing intelligence then just worse Bladesong allows you to use...

Any Fighter is going to be good at fighting with weapons provided you stat your character and choose feats to that end and have at least average rolls. Not quite as good as a Battlemaster or Champion is still really, really good, especially at high level and he will outheal both of those. The...

I would strongly disagree with this. What makes some Ranger subclasses good (not Winter Walker) is if you stop trying to make it be a Martial play it like a magic-first Gish. Max your Wisdom and treat Hunter's Mark like a ribbon instead of something to build around and then quite a few Ranger...

I don't really care about balance, I like cool and fun. The three I really like for myself to play are Scion of the Dead three, Bladesinger and Genie Paladin. The players I DM for love the Banneret and Moon Bard. The others Meh. The first character I am going to play is a multiclass Half...

Winter Walker was their bad attempt to fix all the complaints about making the Ranger class too focused on Hunter's Mark. Their solution - well let's just make HM more powerful on this subclass so players will like it. They totally missed the issues in my opinion.

That is not a solution for the new command. As a matter of fact it is better in this case. You use it on some of the badguys while you focus fire on the others.

D&D 5E (2024) Changes to the Command spell and its use at the table.

I love it. I think it is way more powerful and generally more fun as a player or a DM. In exchange for the numerous ways it was made better it was nerfed in that you can't make up things for the enemy to do. "Surrender" was a popular one at my table in 2014, and also "daydream" to force...
