Dragonlance Lunar Sorcery: A Preview from Shadow of the Dragon Queen

The new Mages of High Sorcery is a good solution to recontextualizing Dragonlance’s arcane magic in 5e. I was never a huge fan of the Summer of Chaos aftermath—if you thought that the Spellplague was drastic, the Age of Mortals in DL was an order of magnitude more severe. All gods gone, magic...

D&D 5E (2014) Dragonlance Shadow of the Dragon Queen Trailer

I’m glad that this isn’t going past level 10. After running two campaigns to the end of tier 3, and even a bit into tier 4, I’m good with high level 5e. The game isn’t at its best past tier 2. 5e shines from levels 5 to 10, maybe to 12.

    Dragonlance Dragonlance "Reimagined".

In addition to what’s been mentioned, you’re not hosed if you lack the rituals that lift curses or diseases or afflictions because it’s possible to get rid of them with skill checks. The healing rituals simply make it faster and easier. In older D&D you’d often need the cleric’s spells or your...

    Dragonlance Dragonlance "Reimagined".

I have to mention how perfect 4e was for War of the Lance Dragonlance. No healing magic? No gods? Ok, no Heal or Religion rituals, no divine classes. That's it. Game still works perfectly without complex cascading mechanical adjustments. It's the only edition of D&D where Age of Despair or early...

Pathfinder 2E How is Pathfinder doing?

It’s very interesting to hear that Pathfinder 2e is Paizo’s best selling product line ever. We now have official confirmation that it’s become more successful than Pathfinder 1e.

D&D 5E (2024) Should Bards use the common "Psionic" spell list instead of Arcane?

Nah. Even the PF2 occult bard is a stretch at times because the occult tradition has to incorporate the weird and Lovecraftian stuff too. A psionic bard doesn't really gel with the classic bard image.

D&D 5E (2014) Considering Bigby's Big Book of Giants: How much use did you get out of Fizban's Big Book of Dragons?

I've used the dragonborn race option, many of the spells, some magic items, and several monsters from Fizban's. Quite a few monsters actually, either straight as is or re-skinned, or I've taken abilities and added them to other creatures. It's been a very useful book for me.

D&D 5E (2014) With Fizban's and now Bigby's, what other groups do you think we'll see with their own books?

Aberrations absolutely. It's been almost 20 years since Lords of Madness. 4e never got an aberrations focused book. Mind flayers and beholders are much too iconic for them not to get a book of their own in 5e.

D&D 5E (2024) First playtest thread! One D&D Character Origins.

Apparently classes will still have class spell lists, the new categories are for feats and races. Mentioned in the accompanying video by Crawford.

D&D General The word "Dweomer" by Gygax

Dweomer was still used in places in 3e and 4e. 3e has a spell called Analyze Dweomer, and a prestige class, Dweomerkeeper, and the 3.5 Mystra plane was called Dweomerheart (also referenced in 4e). 4e has a few powers and a monster with the word 'dweomer' in the names.

D&D 5E (2014) Let’s Read Mordenkainen Presents: Monsters of the Multiverse.

Bless is a spell that can be countered, but bardic inspiration cannot, even though the latter is magical as well. Countercharm is magic, but it's not a spell like many other protective spells, and thus it can't be counterspelled. Performance of creation from the College of Creation subclass is a...

D&D 5E (2014) Some Gems I Have Forgotten In The DMG

Nah. The 5e marking is fiddly as hell. It's a perfect example of a half-baked variant rule that clearly wasn't thoroughly playtested. I've used it and discarded it after a few sessions. Everyone marks with every attack. It's a nightmare to track. One of the worst variant rules I've tried!

    D&D 5E (2014) Paizo's 'The Abomination Vaults' Pathinder AP Coming to 5E

My issue with Paizo's APs is that because they write the books individually, by different authors, the overall adventure path lacks connective tissue. The path is often more like several disjointed roads, created by the same company but by different teams. Also, the structure of publishing...

D&D 5E (2014) Changes to D&D's Spellcasting Monsters: Streamlining Your Way To Bliss

For 5e? Yeah, I have, and I dislike the process more than I like it. It’s pretty time consuming because if you follow the (until now) default way of doing things, you comb through the spell lists trying to find the right spells that are suitably threatening without possibly making some players’...

D&D 5E (2014) Changes to D&D's Spellcasting Monsters: Streamlining Your Way To Bliss

Don't wizards already do magic that's not spells? They can get a bunch of magical abilities that don't use spellcasting. I'm thinking of stuff like wizard subclass powers that are magic but not spells.

Pathfinder 2E Encounter Design in PF2 works.

Earlier you mentioned that you didn’t understand why people would use the PWL variant—this is one of the main reasons. A comfortable band of -1 to +1 creatures is very narrow for the GM to work with. PWL opens up that band to accommodate a larger variety of enemies. A level 1 guard NPC in...

Pathfinder 2E Encounter Design in PF2 works.

Both Archives of Nethys and PF2 Easy Tools have a toggle for proficiency without level when looking up creatures, so you don’t need a VTT to have the automated experience with the variant. If you want to just create groups of enemies/creatures without having to worry about encounter balance...

    D&D 5E (2014) What is a petrified eye of a Newt?

It’s definitely the eye of a beast in D&D. It says “eye of a newt”, and not “eye of newt”, and hex is a nasty warlock spell of death, so a nasty component makes perfect sense. Also, it’s not consumed, so it could be an heirloom that you’re carrying around. Now, the real question is how on earth...

    D&D General Why is D&D 4E a "tactical" game?

I do like the relative simplicity of how 5e and PF2 handle minions or mooks, in that you use creatures of a much lower CR/level, no need to find or create minions. In practice though this seems to only work from lowish to mid levels. Goblins and wolves and cultists are simple enemies in 5e and...

    D&D General Why is D&D 4E a "tactical" game?

You don’t have to change the 4e ogre’s stats if the group faces them later. There’s actually no official rules in 4e telling you to do that. Minionizing a creature is essentially a house rule. The level 6 ogre doesn’t contribute as a meaningful threat when the PCs are level 12 however, but the...
