D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I don't think the level of reward and punishment that resulted was intended. They kinda.. overdid... it.. to the point it became very obvious and hurt the game

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Profit and theft versus work hours required to make it It's a lot of work hours and upfront dollars to make something that most fans feel is worth paying I have tons of ideas for modules that possibly could be very popular. I'm sure many many people in this space couldn't do the same thing...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I didn't say it was hard. I said that it was designed for people who weren't pushing the game in any sort of optimization seriously which is typically new players, poor players, or players playing for complete flavor. But what I mean is that if your players put just a little bit of s...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

All the podcasts, articles, videos, and interviews by Mearls and later Crawford. They say it all the time. 5e was designed to go back to the traditional feel of D&D but have room for all these optional opt in modules and variants for different fandoms who wanted different feels. But...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

3E that was designed for new players and players who don't seriously optimize. This is why so many of the players handbook feats and options were so bad for optimization. But as people left and came in, the later products became tailored to optimize us. It's like the story of the 2014...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

My opinion is that 5e followed the flaw of 3e where it was designed around the new players, poor players, and other under optimized players. So once players gained experience and learned the game, they had to form a gentleman's agreement to not meaningfully optimize building or playing unless...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

5e was designed with an open skeleton for an old school fanbase with an assumption that 3PP would produce modules for 3e fans, 4e fans, and story forced game fans It didn't happen.

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

Circle Castling does help the 5MWD Problem as factions with many weak casters can gather together for bigger spells if the PC alert a faction then rest.

WOTC was awful with it because they expected 3PPs and DMs to do it. Same with Bosses and the Legendary Resistance kludge. WOTC expected 3PPs and DMs to fix it.

Mostly material external from core game loops. 5e was designed with gaps so if people wanted dynamic boss fight, you could implant Cinematic combat rules and Boss trait variant rules. But no 3PP ever did as anything but a full rewrite.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

I'm not calling for a whole rewrite. Im saying after multiclassing and feats, there wasn't really any big popular crunchy variant rules.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Most of those were side modules, not internal or replacement modules. They weren't that many internal or replacement modules for fifth edition however, if I am correct fifth edition was designed in a way for those internal and replacement modules particularly so that those internal modules...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Thats not modular design. 5e used DLC design. That's like how the first version of every Sid Meier's Civilization game strips out bits of it and leaves gaps. Then they add in the DLCs that reinsert Religion or Ideology or Trade systems in later. Except WOTC expected 3PPs, Fanzine writers...

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

There's no real problem with prepackaged backgrounds. The issue is that WOTC only at first offered a limited set of backgrounds based on backwards compatibility and forced the ASI and feats to fit.

Not enough visibility on DM Guild to be worth it Maybe Kickstarter. Some systems require a lot of money in marketing to make a profit.

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

I didn't say fun. I said funsies Funsies is when you start not taking the game seriously at all and tailor the game expectations to those of people who don't care about the rules. It's like how in the one of the official videos, the designers were flabbergasted that someone would want to play...

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

Said it once Say it again My hypothesis is that In-house WOTC D&D games are heavily tilted to "funsies" tables with stereotypical PCs and monsters. It's not that they aren't optimized but their tables have walking stereotypical builds who do suboptimal tactics and weaker options for fun or...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

That seems like another easy solution Stunned becomes Dazed Frightened becomes Startled Charmed becomes Fascinated Restrained becomes Slowed The issue is that the fandom has a percentage who wants simple and you'd have to create a downgrade for each status effect and place it in the control...

Both 3.5 and 4e went for the first camp. But 3.5e was retroactive while 4e is deliberate.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

No I will have to slightly disagree. Really the whole rub was between the two camps: The camp where you roll for most skill checks. The camp where DM adjudicates that certain checks are completely impossible or completely trivial that you would never ever roll for them. 4e went with the first...
