D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Many of the decisions in the game that still remain in a game what decisions made for grognards who no longer play the game. At some point, the community that exists for 5e and for the continuation of D&D has to be willing to change things and lose access to their old product in order to get...

D&D 5E (2024) Does Innate Sorcery grant True Strike advantage?

My ruling is "Guided by a flash of magical insight, you make one attack with the weapon used in the spell’s casting. " Innate Sorcery, No. But oddly Seeking Spell, Yes To me it's not an attack roll of the spell but it's an attack roll for the spell to do anything. The spell isn't making the...

At some point we have to put some blame of the community Problems with D&D have been known for years. They don't get fixed because large swathes of the community refuse to either Let their old books go for possible, newer, non-compatible.better designed book Share the design space with fans...

D&D 5E (2014) The 2024 Ranger is Actually Pretty Good (with numbers)

Restrained Condition helps others. Casting Ensnaring strike solely for advantage is not a good use of slots.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Its the PowerXQuantity equation that causes short work days. I'll bet that Rogue ask to rest early the least for themselves..Because Rogues don't get much from resting except HP. Archer Rangers likely don't ask for rests early as well. Because although rangers have a lot of resources, their...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

That's Uhh what I'm describing. Bosses die too fast because The Full casters can attempt to paralyze or buff the martials every turn instead of once The Half casters can drop a buff, AOE, or Smite every turn instead of once The Noncaster can go all out on the goes affected by 1 and 2. Once...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

The issue isn't the damage spells. It's the shenanigans spells and the suck spells. If you have 7 big spells and you have 7 fights, you can cast 1 per fight and go down to Cantrips and SR features. Maybe you hold back and save 1 more spell for the boss. Or you cast a definitive or utility...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Guys, we don't have to take away long rests. I'm just suggesting that a 9th level Wizards slots don't look like 4/3/3/3/1 + X That's 7 good spells. Seven spells of 3rd level or greater at level 9. Seven And every full caster in the party has this. All of them with seven high power spells...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Short Rest were never the problem. Monsters were designed to take 100% of a part's short rest power. The issue is they were not designed for taking 50% of the daily resources.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Why? Why do you need 10 spells a day when you wake up? 5MWD. Is a Power x Quantity issue. 4e showed fans refuse to sacrifice power so the only option is quantity.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

5.5e is unsatisfying to many and still has the Boss problem because many fans didn't want it to diverge from 5.0 because they spent so much time and a lot of money in 5.0. Halve spell slots and other daily resources and most of the problems go away.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

5e was designed around ending sessions with your resources not at 100%. Every single edition was designed for you to end with your PCs incomplete unless you were running Gygaxian Hubtowns . That's is why Vancian magic was chosen. Because you were supposed to literally erase expended spells so...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

The point of this thread is many DMs don't like their bosses being too easily beaten by PCs and not having to force higher CR or stats of guidelines which can TPK easily.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

It's was D&D. It just was with 10 fixes when the community was ready for 5 in 2008. In 2025 today, the community wanted all 10 of 4e fixes (playtested better of course). That's the fundamental problem that D&D has. Everybody knows what the issue is when it comes to bosses. The problem is that...

Another thing to remember 5e was mostly playtested off a single adventure. IIRC The bosses were at the end of dungeons or solo partykillers.
