    What was your 2nd RPG?

My beard is almost all grey and white, but the hair on top of my head is still all brown. Runs in Mom’s family - she’s 95 and has less than 10 grey hairs.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

What worse, sometimes, are the people who genuinely think they’re being helpful, who have no idea what it’s like outside the narrow tunnel of their own outlook. Many of the folks in that 1990s thread were of that sort. They just didn’t get genuinely not liking blood and gore.

    What was your 2nd RPG?

I don’t remember right now whether it was RuneQuest or Traveller. Pretty sure Superhero 2044 was third.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

It was in the ‘90s I saw a thread with someone asking for horror films that aren’t bloody or gory. Responses included Alien, The Thing, and Reanimator.

    Funko Pop! in Trouble

Caitlin Kiernan’s early novel Threshold has things to say about Georgia trilobites, drawing a their experience as a paleontologist before turning full-time to fiction. They turn out to be things that do not make the characters glad to know. Lovecraftian things. Great stuff.

What are you reading in 2025?

I’ve been dangerously angry at political stuff today, and Hailey Piper is being, once again, good for helping me focus that feeling and discharge it via fiction. This is some great writing:

What are you reading in 2025?

Whoops, duplicate post. I agree that Doppelgänger is a fascinating and worthwhile read.

What are you reading in 2025?

Hailey Piper keeps getting better. The opening of All the Hearts You Eat: The story seems to focus on at least two young trans women living in a small Atlantic coastal town. But knowing Piper’s work, she’s going to let me turn the page and run into an unexpected revelation that changes the...

Whoa. Okay. That makes his role in Pacific Rim that much more delightfully odd.

D&D General Explain 5(.5)e to me

It really is remarkably hard to be consistently aware of yourself as a person who exists in a historical and social context, whose views do not descend directly from absolute truth but are shaped in countless ways by different kinds of other people.

The Mummy 4 Is Actually Happening?

If it happens and Fraser and Weiss have a good time, I’ll be happy for them. If something I like comes of it, I’ll be happy for myself, too.

What are you reading in 2025?

Me too! I can look at my shelves and see books both famous and obscure, and recall moments I read them hither and yon. And they were. No joke, an important part of the mid-20th century mass democratic culture. When it became easy for people to read great literature, political philosophy, etc...

What are you reading in 2025?

Yes. Cumulative effects take their toll, like acceleration to terminal velocity. And to note again, yes, ebooks played a part, but in a world where the Palm, Newton, etc, died without successors, the key factors would still be there. Ebooks have been a handy excuse at least as much as a cause...

What are you reading in 2025?

As someone who personally reads nearly exclusively in digital forms, this has always been my take. There’s a vocal minority of digital readers who want physical books to go away, but I was never one of them and in fact spent time while active on social media arguing with them. I love physical...

Resource Management, or How I Learned To Stop Worrying About Rations and Love Mana

I like resource management at the level of Ironsworn’s Supply trait. It’s on a 1-5 scale and covers most consumables. What’s interesting is that you sometimes have the option and sometimes have to lose some of it in combats going badly, injury, travel mishaps, and the like. And it’s included as...

What are you reading in 2025?

They did. It took at least a century for there to be a solid scholarly and collector consensus in favor of the printed word without major detractors.

OSR Games that really use combat as a fail state?

In Cthulhu Dark, which is the foundation for Trophy, combat with other humans is resolved in a simple set of rolls. Trying to fight monsters get you killed. You need to try something else.
