Wizards of the Coast Head Explains Benefits to D&D Franchise Model

I see no issue with a company making money as long as they are not participating in unfair or shady business practices. If they come out with a TV show or movie, they can't force me to watch it. They can't force me to buy a video game but if one comes out that I enjoy? Why would I not want that?

D&D General D&D weapons vs reality

I would also note that for the most part D&D combat doesn't resemble armies at war, it models small skirmishes. Most characters are not going to be the target of dozens of arrows flying their way in a volley. Throw in that the quality of armor varied widely from crudely made and was better...

D&D General D&D weapons vs reality

That depended on the quality of the armor and the bow. I've seen demos where an arrow from a longbow could penetrate but not by enough to do significant damage. On the the hand, the average soldier was not provided with high quality armor. But I do agree that crossbows were easier to use and...

Wizards of the Coast Head Explains Benefits to D&D Franchise Model

DnD isn't and without a total redesign of the game can't become MtG. Obviously they want a steady revenue stream from DndBeyond and they want to make a profit on other products. That's how capitalism works - nobody publishes a game unless they believe they can make money off of it. For what...

D&D General D&D weapons vs reality

I groan every time you see those scenes where the breastplate is obviously made out of tinfoil because the only thing stopping someone from shoving a sword through their chest and out the other side is the ability to parry attacks. Why would you even bother wearing armor? Almost as bad as the...

D&D General D&D weapons vs reality

Some of these posts remind me of the people who claim that a modern tank is easy to take out because "All you have to do is throw a grenade down the tank's barrel." High quality armor was extremely expensive, if it didn't work it wouldn't have been used.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I use it for a general quick breakdown when thinking about what to use. Although I do occasionally pull up a monster and go "Huh, I didn't know it could do that" while running the game. In any case it didn't used to be as big a deal back when I first started DMing because there were fewer...

Wizards of the Coast Head Explains Benefits to D&D Franchise Model

I wish they hadn't, it was a nice feature. It was also shortly before they started supporting more third party publications and the 2024 release, that may have had something to do with it.

Wizards of the Coast Head Explains Benefits to D&D Franchise Model

I'm failing to see what your point is, if any. I think it was unfortunately an ill-thought out project. Many software projects fail, even if I don't really buy the 70% estimate because many of those failures are "failed to deliver everything initially promised" or "were in the earliest of...

We have no idea what kind of cost structure they had in mind. From the looks of it, neither did they.

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

It's only irrelevant if you're redefining the game and to the point there's no recognizable game being used as a foundation. I know some people go to that extreme, I know I don't and I've never heard of anyone in my actual gaming circle going to that extreme.

Wizards of the Coast Head Explains Benefits to D&D Franchise Model

Even if they did have plans to make custom minis, so what? I buy minis now for my game, why should a digital mini be any different? Micro-transactions always struck me as the mythical boogie-man hiding under the bed to destroy D&D. You could never buy anything that would make your character...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

Which is step 2, but is missing step 1 - easy and simple at a glance. I stat out details now and then for important NPCs or more likely swap thing around like what spells they have prepped or add some other details. But most NPCs? Most NPCs only have 15 minutes of fame if that and I'm lazy...

Wizards of the Coast Head Explains Benefits to D&D Franchise Model

They've released some and there was one (a special gold dragon?) as a bonus for pre-ordering the 2024 rules bundle but they were never for sale that I know of.

Wizards of the Coast Head Explains Benefits to D&D Franchise Model

I likely play too many video games but MMOs have never really been my thing. I've tried a few and I do play some online competitive racing games but the game play loop of the MMOs I've tried just doesn't have much appeal.

Wizards of the Coast Head Explains Benefits to D&D Franchise Model

I think it was interesting what he said about video game development "In addition, Wizards of the Coast operates a central content development team that any of its internal or external studios can draw on. The idea, he says, is to have a 'set of artists and designers that are trained up on the...

I think they're just acknowledging that in-person play is important and to counter the argument that I've seen made that they're pushing for more and more online play.

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

If you don't use something like CR how would you be able to tell at a glance how powerful a goblin is versus a tarrasque? CR certainly has it's faults because no generic rating system will always work, but it serves a purpose. Personally I find it reasonably accurate. They can, but it also...

D&D 5E (2024) NPCs, and the poverty of the core books

I discuss how likely the characters are to die when we do our session 0 with the understanding that death will never be completely off the table. Meanwhile we like tough combats which means there is a risk of death. A few sessions ago, the characters had just gotten done fighting some vampire...

D&D General GMing and "Player Skill"

Depends on how you define player skill. I've never really cared for things like math puzzles for example. I am not my character and if Alex is playing an intelligence 20 wizard but Alex has a hard time with adding much less math puzzles. Meanwhile Kim is playing a barbarian who's intellect...
