    August 2012--Menzoberranzan: City of Intrigue

Just spotted this on Amazon. The new setting hinted at at GenCon 2011, or just a supplement?

Legends and Lore 11/22/2011 - A Different Way to Slice the Pie

Prima facie rationale? Simple. Gamers who've reached higher levels have enough experience to have mastered the basic options and can thus include more extensive rules. Contraindicating this is that groups may be experienced players starting new games at low levels, or new gamers who want to...

Legends and Lore 11/22/2011 - A Different Way to Slice the Pie

Actually, when it comes to Dragonlance, the games have never driven changes to the fiction--it'd be more accurate to say the opposite, although even then, not strictly true. The Fifth Age and the 3E relaunch were both given the go-ahead after Dragons of Summer Flame and the War of Souls...

New SRD Site for Mutants and Masterminds 3E

Be careful--power points and hero points are explicitly designated Product Identity, and that may extend to anything that refers to them, which would include the cost structures.

    Have I Been Bitten by a Were-Grognard?

Are you convinced that everyone else is doing D&D wrong? :) If no, then it's just nostalgia and/or a renewed appreciation of the merits of older designs. If yes, then you've been infected. Contact your local cleric immediately. :)

    Red Box discontinued......Smart Move?

Entirely possible--there was a window between the closing out of the D&D line at the end of 1993 and the relaunch of the Black Box in the Smaller Tan Box in June or so of 1994, and given strong sales, TSR probably didn't just shut down BB sales for those six months. Indeed, I just acquired...

    Red Box discontinued......Smart Move?

Hmm...when was it marketed as an AD&D introduction? The Black Box received full-on support and connections to the RC line until the end of 1993/start of 1994, at which point 'Regular' D&D was discontinued, the Black Box was repackaged as "the Classic D&D Game" and sort of put out there as a...

    Red Box discontinued......Smart Move?

Define 'Basic'. :) Because there are at least two versions of the Basic set that have done very well--the 1983 Mentzer Red Box, and the 1991 Big Black Box/1070, with the Dragon Cards. The latter didn't do quite so well as the Red Box, but it sold about half a million copies and did better than...

I don't know what just happend, but it seems that Ayn Rand corrupted my player!

I know little of Rand and dislike what I do, but I've wondered for several years now if her philosophy--the independence, emphasis on profit, and contempt for the weak--is well suited to old-school D&D PCs. ;)

Owning multiple copies of RPG books

I own multiple copies of several key Ravenloft products, but all the secondary copies (and several of the prime copies :) ) were purchased secondhand and cheap. They include: Ravenloft: Realm of Terror boxed set (picked up an incomplete 1st printing for a few dollars to combine with my second...

    D&D's Origins in Gothic Fiction

Ravenloft 3rd Edition made the connections and parallels between Otranto, the Gothic genre, and D&D explicit in its introduction. :)

    D&D 5E (2014) 4.5e: the Spring Cleaning Edition.

I prefer the idea of removing stat modifiers from attack rolls altogether, myself, but that's definitely a 5E-level change.

    Monte Cook back at wizards

Well, some of this is that D&D is the 800-lb. gorilla, so even a small portion of its fanbase getting irritated looks big in this hobby. But I think it should be noted that it's only been two changes that have been dramatic--the two full edition changes shepherded by WotC. 1E->2E caused some...

September In the Works is up

There is a difference, though. The ring of humanoid influence appears to make the diplomats better at what they do, rather than providing a way to bypass Diplomacy or Bluff entirely.

    BESM anyone?

Unfortunately, it sounds like the mess left behind by Guardians of Order's collapse has left the rights to the material in such a mess than no one is ever likely to be able to professionally revive it. There's a fan community out there, although I don't have the links offhand, and DriveThruRPG...

AD&D 1E Core 1e vs. Core 2e: What are the mechanical differences?

Introduced in Unearthed Arcana, which is arguably the '1.5E' supplement.

Legends & Lore: The Loyal Opposition

Feels to me like a hybrid of D&D/C&C/the old SAGA System (training levels in ability scores, for example). I'd really like to see where this goes, but I think it's better as a variant of D&D rather than a uniform way. Then again, I think D&D is too big for 'one uniform' game at this point. :)

Has there ever been an Ultima tabletop rpg?

Aaron Allston was working on designing an official one in the late 80s or early 90s, but the project fell through. (I'm don't recall why, and the old version of Allston's web page appears to have vanished into the Stygian Abyss. Apparently a 'Savage Empire' game he designed did get a limited...

Gencon: Any non-Essentials content coming up?

I'm beginning to wonder what 'minimal' support means. Sometimes it seems to mean "30 different builds, each with three unique power choices or feat choices at each decision point, all of them designed with bleeding-edge hyper-optimization in mind." ;)

Holy sheepdip - wotc to republish old editions

Almost everything. There were a few odds and ends that never went up--I remember waiting for GAZ10 The Orcs of Thar and Wrath of the Immortals to show up, for example. Now, IIRC, reports from the DDI seminar said that they were working on print-on-demand for maps and "other things", so...
