Have I Been Bitten by a Were-Grognard?

Resistance is futile.

What?! C'mon. SOMEbody was gonna have to say it eventually.

Enjoy the new-found nostalgic goodness....(its how we transmit the assimilation nardo-probes). You should be fully grognardized by the next full moon. :D

Are you convinced that everyone else is doing D&D wrong? :)

If no, then it's just nostalgia and/or a renewed appreciation of the merits of older designs.

If yes, then you've been infected. Contact your local cleric immediately. :)

No, you are safe. Zere is no such thing as zer vere-grognard. It is zer legend told by superstitious peasants. You may have been bitten by somevun else, but vere-grognard, it is impossible.

In any case, velcome, young vun. Velcome to zer castle of zer grognards. Ve are alvays glad to meet fresh ... blud.

It's a humorous take on the state of things to suggest that "were-grognards" might exist but I think the term is being misapplied here. As one of the few (are there only a handful of us?) around here who wargamed before RPGs even existed, I've always thought of grognards in the original sense of the term (as applied to gamers) as a gamer whose roots in wargames caused them to approach RPGs as a wargamer or to look on roleplaying with a certain disdain. As such, the existence of "neo-grogs" (if you will) seem to be players who even approach new renditions of modern RPGs as would a wargamer, eschewing the roleplaying aspects of the games in favor of the wargaming aspects those games, embracing the legacy and traditions of the wargaming design roots inherent in all roleplaying games.

I've played dozens and dozens of wargames as well as dozens and dozens of RPGs, and when I play wargames I focus on the wargaming aspects and when I play roleplaying games I like to focus on the roleplaying aspects of those games. I suppose from that perspective a "Were-grognard" would be one who joins a roleplaying game but, upon seeing the full d20 shining above undergoes a transformation, and something deep within their being gets them howling for wargaming goodness. :D

I use a bunch of OSR stuff in my 4e games, and read several OSR blogs avidly - Grognardia of course, but also Dreams in the Lich House and Monsters & Manuals; playing D&D With Porn Stars has lots of good stuff too.

Am I becoming a were-grognard?

Is your facial hair growing faster than normal?
Have you found yourself gaining weight?
Ever wake up with Cheetos stains on your hands and polyhedral dice scattered about?

You might have been bitten by a grognard.

Beware! Grognards roam gaming halls day and night with stubby pencils, scribbled grid paper, lead minis, and worn out dice. If you even suspect you have been bitten by a grognard you should immediately head to your nearest gaming store and buy the newest released RPG possible. This is imperative! If you do not remove the disease from your system quickly it may become irreversible.

Think of the children!

You are not alone....But did you play Tactics II? Muhahaha...

SkidAce - It was my first wargame and just this last year I found an excellent copy for $10 at Half Price Books. :)

To the OP, I doubt that you have been afflicted with Grognardia Hysterolytica. I think a more logical impotus for your Stage 3 Nostalgis Wantagetis is likely a seasonal thing much like hay fever. There is something about the holidays, crummy weather, fading daylight and falling leaves. In some people it brings out depression...and for us nerds it brings about some backward mental compatability, appreciation for warm inside places, books galore, arguing about theoretical physics over a cup of mulled wine or spiced cider via Teamspeak, and fond memories for days of using model train scale miniatures to represent the villagers in Homlet.

If loving games is wrong...I don't wanna be right *sappy world hug*
