    Game Mechanics And Player Agency

I'd just note that the bonus or penalties awarded can be very different. So a Persuaded person might have +1 to +5 to related actions, whereas Charm Person could be -10 to everything including AC (or how about minus X Hit Points per round due to the mental anguish fighting against the spell).

    Game Mechanics And Player Agency

I like your explanation about the difference between Charm Person and Persuasion. One problem I see with games such as D&D is that they have a very detailed system for combat, and a very simple system for social interactions. And this causes some of the problems that this thread is discussing...

    Cursed Items in 2nd edition?

This sounds like a set up for an episode of Kono Subarashii Sekai ni Shukufuku wo! (God's blessing on this wonderful world!). PC1: I've been cursed with this ring. If I take it off I'll die in two days. If I leave it on its only a matter of time before I'm disintegrated or the people seeking it...

[UPDATED - With Cubicle 7] Games Workshop Concluding Deal For Licensing Rights To Warhammer Fantasy

What I mean is that the system in 2E only allowed Arcane Lore or Dark Lore taken once (unless you read the Journeyman Wizard career in a particular way - I was surprised you could read it such that allowed a character to have both Arcane Lore and Dark Lore). Which meant a wizard couldn't later...

[UPDATED - With Cubicle 7] Games Workshop Concluding Deal For Licensing Rights To Warhammer Fantasy

I would like to see the following: The career system to remain. Without a doubt the careers system has been the best introduction to the Old World Setting and it would be a shame to see it dropped. A new system in general - D100 roll-under just feels limiting and contributes to the often...

    Monster of the Week

5 out of 5 rating for Monster of the Week Like all Powered by the Apocalypse games, the use of playbooks allows player to quickly get into playing the game rather than getting bogged down in character creation. It offers advice for the GM to run monster hunter genre games.

How should a GM handle refused plots

Just move on. Perhaps you can re-introduce it later. Also a GM could prepare themselves by asking what kind of plots the Players are interested in before starting play, thus reduce the probability of plots being rejected.

    Preferred tone of RPG text

I think this sounds about right for me too.

Do you like D&D or do you like RPGs?

I like RPGs in general (which I assume includes D&D). I do understand that people can get stuck on playing one game over others for various reasons (e.g. some may see the money spent on one game going to waste if they play another).

What is your LEAST favorite setting?

D'oh! My face is red. I did not notice.

What is your LEAST favorite setting?

Dragonlance. Mainly because it was my favorite setting (I just loved Dragonlance Adventures) but with the flips and turns that Weis and Hickman took (the Gods returned, no they've gone, oh noes Takhasis is ded etc) with the novels / setting my love for the setting turned to ashes.

Changeling Cantrip Cards, are they worth having?

The cards were a stupid idea - a playing aid that was collectible in nature.

Pronouns in D&D - How should gender be handled?

As a staunch traditionalist myself, using "they" dates back to the 15th century whereas the use of "he" appears to date from the 18th century. I think using "he" must have been political correctness gone mad and despise it too.

Art PACT: Paying freelancers in exposure

Has anyone ever had "pay for exposure" go on to paid work? I find it hard to believe it would unless the work was for a major company/product line. Which a prospective employer has to buy. And read through. And decide to track down an artist of an illustration they liked rather than use from the...

numerera GM intrusions: help me get it

GM Intrusions are just putting some mechanics behind something that already happens. How many times have you had characters, for example, climbing a cliff and the GM says "roll some dice to see if you avoid the crumbling outcrop". As said above, a good place to use them is when no dice roll...

Any RPGs that focus on roleplaying instead of combat?

The thing is that the rules cannot deal with such Players. Neither can real life. If a Player says "I want to kill you" to a king when they really mean "forsooth, for thou art a king most wise" then until we develop telepathic powers to be able to distinguish the true meaning of a Player's...
