Question, why not fold in many of the old classes as build for more basic classes? Invokers could easily be cleric builts that are controllers. Swordmages might well be wizard builts. Shamans can be druid builts (i'd be tempted to suggest druids should be shaman builts . . .).

I would challenge that they have been successful, at least the D&D department. They have never been a star, they had a period as a cow (questionable since the market is small), they are currently a question mark and they can end up a dog any month now.

I get a feeling that Tarquin is a Rogue/Fighter/Dashing Swordsman and actually is somewhat min/maxed (like Ftr 4 for weapon specialization definitely). It would make a nice change from his sons.
