D&D General Players Decide when to Level Up

I love this openess, and I'm going to bring this up with my group.

So you're done with D&D but still want to play D&Dish fantasy...

I'm familiar with Nimble and Shadowdark, and they are both very smartly done. What would you say are the strengths of Index Card RPG and 5 Torches Deep? I've heard of them, but have no experience with them.

    Are Ghosts Real? (a poll)

    So far so good!

    Are Ghosts Real? (a poll)

To paraphrase Tolkien: maybe what's important isn't what's real, but what's important.

    Are Ghosts Real? (a poll)

I guess my thinking is that it does me no harm to allow for the existence of ghosts (however defined) or fairies or whatever. I was raised to embrace reason and faith, but I also know that for some that sounds like nonsense, but I'm okay with that.

    Are Ghosts Real? (a poll)

The uncertainty is exactly why I leave room for it.

    Are Ghosts Real? (a poll)

I generally believe in believing in things (and people), so sure - why not ghosts? That sounds flippant, but I just like to allow room for things.

D&D General How many healing potions do you give your party?

None. In 5E, so many classes have healing features that I simply don't bother.

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

I've never thought about this before, but it makes sense. The fleeting nature of treasure, and the curse of wanting treasure or power, are very S&S and very Tolkien. If also never thought of this before, but it's true. Some of the younger peoples don't know it, but for the longer-lived folks...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps - Official Teaser Trailer (2025)

I didn't know what to think of her casting, but you hit the nail on the head. Her performance is the most charismatic of the four, by far.

Worlds of Design: In the Shadow of Tolkien

I read The Hobbit not long before the Rankin-Bass animated tv version premiered, and not long after that I was introduced to D&D by a friend in junior-high/middle-school. By then I had read LOTR. To this day playing a human ranger is one of my defaults, because of Aragorn (and Tarzan - I had...

    Spoilers Superman Spoiler Thread

Pretty much loved this movie. It's such a fresh take on the character - Superman as just a guy, who gets frustrated, angry, lashes out, gets hurt, has to recover - and Corenswet was perfect casting for this approach. The only thing that sticks in my craw is the "proton river" sequence - it's...

Attributes Should Be a Guideline for Personality

Literally tinkering with something along these lines right now. It currently goes something like this: ABILITY I do things… Value I admire… Goal I want… Flaw I’m kept from this Goal by… STR forcefully directness, power, force DEX adroitly deftness, coordination CON doggedly...

So you're done with D&D but still want to play D&Dish fantasy...

When you can, could you explain this a bit: how it's different, how it plays, etc? What are the main things that make Hackmaster work for you? I've looked some Mork Borg stuff, but somehow I haven't grokked it - how would pitch it in a nut-shell? This is my favorite thing about PF, although...

The Fantastic Four: First Steps - Official Teaser Trailer (2025)

But...is the movie about those real-world parallels? I mean, I never get the sense in that movie that it's trying to talk about that. Maybe Thunderbolts is just more obvious about it?

The Fantastic Four: First Steps - Official Teaser Trailer (2025)

It is overtly, pointedly addressing real-world issues, but in a different way. Thunderbolts is arguably overt about it, but does a lot of its work with metaphors.

Could an American write Doctor Who? - Babylon 5 creator throws hat in the ring

This is a good point. I was going to suggest the option of a Sherlock-like approach, with three or four 1.5-hour episodes/movies per season, but that would have the same problem.

What are you reading in 2025?

Vacationing in Ireland soon, so I'm reading The Story of Ireland by Neil Hegarty, and The Origins of the Irish, by J.P. Mallory.
