Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

Alternatively the player can just adapt and use the best weapon he can find with the choices he's made. There's also a more realistic idea of potentially retraining that feat choice or if not following strictly to the module then questing for a magical +1 weapon of your preferred type. I don't...

You cannot simply weight a +1 in str for a fighter the same as +1 cha for a Fighter either just because they both give bonuses to a few different things.

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

One can easily view that part as they chose to be a fighter because they had +1 str, instead of they got extra strength for choosing to be a fighter.

    Why do we need thieves??

IMO. The game has 3 primary subsystems. Attacks Spells Skills Not just thievery in general, but you need some way for a character to specialize toward each of these. For a system that uses dedicated packages of abilities that's geared toward a specific theme (aka class), the theme for a...

IMO that's completely dysfunctional player. It also highlights the trap of tying yourself to a single weapon type from feats too early.

Unearthed Arcana WOTC still can't get the backgrounds right in the new FR book.

Right, I much preferred 2014's backgrounds being of limited mechanical benefit for that exact reason. Classes are the same and there are clearly some classes that are better than others, even though they are fairly close overall. IMO class is the ultimate roleplay story choice. IMO. There's...

    D&D General Should you Multiclass?

Someone earlier mentioned prestige classes. That’s essentially what subclasses are.

    D&D General Should you Multiclass?

I wish it weren’t the case either but I think it’s inevitable. More choices in reality tends to yield greater optimization potential because the potential gains are cumulative across all choices.

    D&D General Should you Multiclass?

IMO the difference is that once you aren’t making choices about what you want to play level by level then you actually differentiate your characters in play/personality/imagination/goals instead of just mechanics.

    D&D General Should you Multiclass?

Sounds perfect to me. Game should be more about playing the character than building it.

    D&D General Should you Multiclass?

IMO The game isn’t fun if all choices have the same overall effect. They should mostly all be viable but there will always be some better than others unless we go completely symmetric design.

    D&D General Should you Multiclass?

Limit? No! Just not eliminate single class character concepts.

    Funko Pop! in Trouble

    Sad but not super surprising.

    D&D General Should you Multiclass?

Doing that you quickly end up with multiclass characters are always better. One thing I can say about 5e multiclassing is that for the level 1-20 progression it's very rare to be able to say that the single class character isn't better than some multiclass combo for at least some levels in that...

    D&D General Should you Multiclass?

I think you'd have to go the other way. If you have X warrior features then your next warrior feature costs more. It's very easy to tune the 'more' such that it's almost always better to hybrid, which isn't an improvement either IMO. Yea, synergistic abilities is usually the cause of...

    D&D General Should you Multiclass?

IMO. There is a fundamental problem with point buy. It assumes the value of all abilities is independent of what abilities you have already chosen. It’s not.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranged Builds Thread

If dude would add some numbers to his videos id be much happier. Though he is okay to listen to otherwise. Key takeaways - Limited range. 30ft before disadvantage. Relies on elven accuracy which is not 2024 core and thus may not be available (like at my table). Multiclasses out of Paladin...

Sorlock is a good call. It starts slow but scales really well. Maybe. Though CME is still like 10ft range. Hardly ranged damage IMO.

    D&D 5E (2024) Ranged Builds Thread

Broadly speaking I see 4 paths to ranged damage that scales well into t3 and t4. 1. Be a fighter 2. Be a rogue 3. Use summons and cantrips (warlock/wizard with summon fey/undead and EB) 4. Use a concentration aoe damage spell and cantrips (moonbeam or conjure animals comes to mind)...
