Paladins: Lawful Good only and other restrictions

In AD&D, the Paladin required Chr 17. Chr was usually a dump stat in AD&D, since it didn't affect combat at all ... unlike current chr which is actually useful in combat. So the Paladin's requirement for a high chr balanced out the Paladin's benefits beyond what a fighter received. (since if...

Paladins: Lawful Good only and other restrictions

Suppose instead of an alignment restriction to lawful good, Paladin's had a knight's code of honor. The code of honor might include the various 1e restrictions, or perhaps something similar to the 3e Knight or some of the vows from the book of exalted deeds. Does it make a difference if the...

    Class complexity in D&D

One way to accomplish simplicitly is to reduce the number of books (core rules only, eseential rules only, basic rules only, etc.). Another way is to keep level down(level 1-3 only, etc.).

    Boss Monsters

D&D 3.x didn't use solo terminology, but there were certain monsters that were better boss monsters than others. A good example would be a dragon. Compare a dragon to almost any other monster of its CR, and you'll see what I mean.

    Taunts & Marks vs. Challenges

As a long-time tank, I despise taunts, marks, etc. I'd much rather have a high damage attack than a high threat attack. That said, I like the challenge concept. If I damage an opponent, and nobody else damages the opponent, it makes sense that the opponent would try to damage me back. edit...

Determining Experience and Rewards for overcoming challenges

How do you determine experience and rewards for challanges? Example: Party A encounters challenge 1. It takes 3 hours for party A to succeed. Party B encounters challenge 1. It takes 5 minutes for party B to succeed. Suppose that party A and B have the same level (although classes and gear...

Paladins: Lawful Good only and other restrictions

Thanks for the comments so far. Commenting on my own questions below. I think Paladins should be Lawful Good Heroes with a knightly code. I think Paladins may worship one or more gods, but their powers actually come from lawful good holy source (i.e. heroic ideal of chivalry and valor). By...

Paladins: Lawful Good only and other restrictions

In AD&D, Paladins were a restricted class. Paladins had to be lawful good, had to have chr 17+, and had a number of other restrictions (tithing, other rules related to lawful good). In exchange for all of these restrictions, the Paladin was a fighter+. The paladin had nearly all of the...

    The One Hour D&D Game

I'm all for the one hour adventure. I remember AD&D groups that used to play at lunch in middle school/high school. If your goal is one hour, it helps if your characters are 1st level. Fewer rules, character abilities, and monster abilities at 1st level. The more abilities the characters...

    D&D 5E (2014) Should 5E have Healing Surges?

I could see a rules system where all wounds are healed automatically after combat if you are still alive after combat ends. With perhaps the requirement that you have bandages, water, and five minutes available. I'm ok with that. But Healling surges added too much complexity for my taste. It...

Scaling: How many level 1 characters should it take to defeat a level 10 character?

I agree that the DMG makes the obvious comment that lots of low levels may not be a match for a single high level. But that question is the point of this thread, so that's why I made the comment that I did. With regards to your EL predication comment. You are absolutely correct. But I am...

Scaling: How many level 1 characters should it take to defeat a level 10 character?

I think we saw in Order of the Stick why wizards using undead minions come to a bad end. As for the other dimensional summoned mansion or rope trick, those usually come to a bad end sooner or later. That said, this whole wizard hijack is not really relevant to my original post. My original...

Baldur's Gate Countdown Ends... Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition for Summer 2012

Now that I think more about it, I think I had two (or three) party members with melee weapons and the rest with missile weapons with spell casting turned off. I did it mostly for control purposes... the missile troops didn't move that far, and I found it easier to control 2 or 3 melee...

Baldur's Gate Countdown Ends... Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition for Summer 2012

From your post, I'm not sure if you ever played BG2. My perspective is that BG2 was even better than BG1. The overall story may become boring at a certain point in the game, but the actions of the NPC party members were never boring. If all of the BG2 NPC party member narratives and...

    Character creation as playing D&D

While I certainly agree that character creation is part of the game, I don't fully agree with your post. I see rolling dice and point buy as two different methods with different tradeoffs. With rolling dice, you are essentially gambling as part of your character statistic allocation. With...

Creative ways to place traps in dungeon?

    1) As a general rule, one trap maximum for a single game session (assuming a game session is 3-5 hours). 2) Exceptions to that rule for game sessions that are supposed to put the Rogue(s) in a spotlight. 3) Think about who the target is for the trap. Is this a mousetrap to catch pests? Is this...

Baldur's Gate Countdown Ends... Baldur’s Gate: Enhanced Edition for Summer 2012

BG 3 will be a valuable product, if the existing characters are involved somehow: Minsc, Edwin, etc. If its just the name, and all-new group of characters (as was the original plan for BG3) it becomes much less interesting for me. I don't think the party has to be entirely the same ... BG2...
