I remember 2nd edition had a morale score for monsters but I don't think I've ever seen that since. In my case I either decide for myself or if needs be make it a Will save to see if they run.

The modern versions of the game have to cover opportunities for all potential game styles and that is why it might feel out of touch. Agreed. Not all their adventure paths were up to standard. A couple were truly bad for things like that. There was one I played (something of fire?) that locked you in a demiplane for 3 or 4 levels with no way to buy or sell anything and it made everyone just gnash their teeth. Badly written was...

Paizo's adventure paths are not railroads but they are linear. Linear adventures/campaigns aren't bad as they still allow players to decide how they handle a situation and progress the story their table is telling.

The only edition that feels anything like 2nd edition was 1st edition and even then 2nd was better by a long way. Since then each edition has become it's own thing. If anything 5th feels like the offspring of 3rd and 4th but without the "bad" elements.

I have the three books released for the Primeval RPG (A dinosaur based time travel-ish British show from the mid-00's) and that would work well for a Jurassic Universe RPG. I've often considered doing so myself.

From here on in, I'm with 5th 2024 for my fantasy games. I don't get to RPG as much as I used to so I'm sticking to the new edition.

I prefer the D20/Pathfinder version. The rules are simpler and easy to understand. No fiddly tables.
