Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

I speculate that this may be the issue and maybe the larger issue related to the multiple tpks. I’m not super worried about 4 regular 5e wererats, it would probably be a tough but ultimately winnable slog of an encounter. I am very worried with 4 a5e versions. Maybe some a5e designers can...

D&D 5E (2024) Which class is the most durable (level 1)?

Why would you assume the barbarian gets it and not the fighter?

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

Was the adventure in question written specifically for a5e? Or was it converted to a5e?

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

Oh wow so A5e wererats are buffed. This was 4 creatures with advantage and able to deal 3d6+2 x2 damage at level 3, I think I could kill most 4 person parties with that. Especially if they acted in a single initiative group.

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

Were rats do d6+2 x2 they have about a 50% hit chance on the rogue. Probably a 40% on the Paladin. That’s 5.5 average damage per wererat on the rogue and 4.4 per the Paladin. Rogue probably has 24 hp. Paladin probably has 28. Wererats probably shouldn’t have killed the Paladin in 1 turn and...

You did notice I said "at level 1"?

D&D 5E (2024) Which class is the most durable (level 1)?

Anyways, it strikes me that broadly speaking there are 3 primary durability considerations here. We can add a few more categories but I think most important differences summarize into these categories. First Turn no-prebuff Enemies go first BPS vs AC only 1st encounter Non BPS 1st encounter...

D&D 5E (2024) Which class is the most durable (level 1)?

None of these abilities depend on being attacked. They all depend on taking damage. I do agree with you that relentless endurance is better than the extra hp from being a dwarf! I'm not sure how to account for the dwarfs poison resistance, but my gut says relentless endurance is better than...

D&D General The Beautiful Mess of 5e

IMO. Focus fire is great, but you are generally much better off ensuring your team isn't being focus fired and oftentimes that means not being able to focus fire the enemy as effectively (or if they are then ensure it's an exceptionally defensive character that it's being done to). Any...

D&D General The Beautiful Mess of 5e

I don't think fireball is the best spell in the game at any level. But i do think it's a really good spell to have in the toolbox. It's certainly one of the best non-concentration spells to use level 3+ slots on. To me that places it solidly in B territory.

The party also seems to have went in 1 at a time at least at the start.

D&D 5E (2014) Quick way to fix class balance if you don't use the assumed adventuring day

What I said still stands and it means one cannot balance short and long adventuring days simply by scaling short rest powers and other occurrences like crits by a set factor (kudos to you for trying to account for crits). Because short adventuring days feature harder encounter then caster...

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

Most battles should be easily winnable (no deaths) even with some bad luck and suboptimal tactics. Most players like encounters where they feel powerful. Not everything has to push them to their limits. They also like overcoming the really tough encounters, but the nature of the beast is that...

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

IMO. Not good. Just give me death over that permanent injury. Call on fate will make the game be less deadly but unpredictably so. Also might watch out for how things like lucky interact with it (I’m not super familiar with a5e specifically, so might be a non-issue). The first one is cool...

D&D General Gaining spell slots (and other resources) during the fight

IMO there’s almost no way a human is going to balance such a system appropriately. So far you’ve mentioned 1 aspect, abilities get stronger the longer you wait, but there’s still the side of the coin where abilities used earlier in the encounter are more effective. Balancing this tightrope...

D&D General Does Cleric/Druid get 2x wis bonus to Arcana checks?

Ac would be higher of 13 + dex or beast ac. Though moon Druid gets good ac in beast form in 2024. Formula becomes 13+wis. So probably no improvement for him as Wis should be higher than dex.
