D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Noted, was just trying to help. Unless you're running AL games for the public, I have to strongly pushback on this perception. The DMs Guide gives you the authority in black and white and I could quote you multiple passages but I believe you are already aware of them. The question becomes, why...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

The way I look at the core books, variants, DMs Guild and free stuff that exists is that if those do not work as is, they may spark an idea of how you or your table would prefer it, so they can be customised to your preferences. With regards to your specific issue with Powerful Build As DM I...

D&D 5E (2024) Circle Casting is gonna break a lot of games

That's a hard lesson for Lennithon 2024. He should have cast his at-will Invisibility for his approach to Greenest.

WotC could certainly highlight the DMsGuild but you cannot expect them to advertise the competition (Level Up and all the other 5e variants)

    D&D 5E (2014) How To Make High Level 5E Work.For You +

I have found Time Pressure, Age, Sanity, Madness, Mob Attacks, Mythic Power for Monsters, Touch attacks for Incorporeal opponents, Zones/Auras, Exhaustion and Weapon Sundering all work well to stress high level PCs. Be creative... Have certain psychic attacks not do damage but strip...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Sure, but that is like most things. No all fans of the Orphan Black tv show know there had been a short run comic book connected to the show. No all fans of Lost or The Office see their webisodes. No all fans of musicians or sport stars follow their instagram accounts, potentially missing out on...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Well between DMsGuild and the fanbase freely offering their homebrewery content and ideas on the wide array of platforms and forums, I find we are certainly spoilt in the 5e variant department. 5e (in all its forms) is thriving when it comes to mechanical support.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

@DEFCON 1 how do you come to terms with the fact that you as DM are essentially writing a story with all these narrative fingerprints everywhere? EDIT: To put it another way, in that situation the entire experience for me as DM would feel contrived which would lessen my enjoyment of it all.

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Yes exactly. Queen Bavmorda "Is that the extent of your power, little one?" It always reminds me of that scene which I have etched in my memory from the movie Willow where Willow throws a petrification pebble at Queen Bavmorda and she catches it. Her forearm immediately begins petrifying as...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

There is possible middle ground for those that like save-or-suck and those that prefer making a saving throw every round. This is but one such example. (a) Spell is cast, if the victim succeeds proceed to condition 2. The round thereafter you shake off the effect completely. (b) Spell is cast...

D&D General Mike Mearls says control spells are ruining 5th Edition

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but you could as an option, after a failed saving throw, have the creature lose a Legendary Action to overcome the spell (as part of a Legendary Resistance). It works well in the fiction and for the players. Separate to the above, but somewhat connected - In...

    Matt Colville's Community

I find Matt to be an easy listen - I'm a fan of his temperament (Mercer's too - not that I watch CR). Thankfully I'm in a job where I can just play a podcast in the background most of the time.

D&D General WotC is at it again

In a practical sense what is the effective difference? Can WotC use you ideas to sell new product without paying you royalties? From my rather limited understanding of that clause it appears yes.

    D&D General 5e H E L P! Teacher in need of rescue!

This sounds perfect, a teacher and running a D&D club! If you're creative enough and know how to custom up earlier editions to 5e I'd run Night's Dark Terror specifically Siege at Sukiskyn series of modified encounters. You could do similar stuff with 5e adventurer AP's like the attack on...

I'm with China on this. Movie was great as is.

D&D General WotC is at it again

Good grief I was still under the assumption that Wizards did not have a forum anymore from when they closed it years ago...

D&D General What Are Dragonlance's Weis & Hickman, and Actor Manganiello Cooking Up?

First, I never made the comparison between Orcs of LotR and the Kagonesti - I was referring to the heroes. Second, I do not agree with your assessment of Qualinesti and Silvanesti elves as being auto-good. Third, I have not read the Elf War trilogies or enough Dragonlance to see how the authors...

D&D General What Are Dragonlance's Weis & Hickman, and Actor Manganiello Cooking Up?

My point was that trying to safeguard against memes is a terrible metric. What people remember from the all-white cast of Lord of the Rings are not the memes - so I do think this white-elves dark-elves supposed dilemma is storm in a tea-cup nonsense which would generate a few rage-baiting...

By that metric Django and Inglourious Bastards failed.
