D&D General When (or can) the fiction overrides the DM?

For a new game I usually set up a meta frame for the campaign with a possible bbeg, and the skeleton for a first plot arch. But letting the players wrong conclusions, absurd ideas, "in character" npc bantering and hilarious actions guide my prep and DM:ing makes for a way more enjoyable and...

Rivers of London, RuneQuest Gods, Regency Cthulhu Coming Soon From Chaosium

This is all good and well, but what I really want is official CoC modules for FoundryVTT from Chaosium. Just release it dangit!

    D&D General 6-8 encounters (combat?)

As I've written elsewhere, in 5e I usually run big set piece fights, with as few meaningless small resource depletion fights as possible, preferably none at all, since they ain't fun for anyone. That's why my new go to system for fantasy is Savage Pathfinder - there's no need for the boring stuff.

    Best/Favorite Thin RPG Core Book

Not useful, but I really like light-mid mechanics core rules in really fat books, with lots and lots of cool fluff. And fat fluffy expansions :)

D&D 5E (2014) What is the best official campaign to start off with for first-time D&D players?

Lost Mine of Phandelver from the first starter set get my vote too. Even more so you have even a little earlier experience as DM. Icespire peak etc is too much video game questy in my opinion, while Phandelver is a real campaign. From there you can move to continue the campaign by writing your...

    D&D 5E (2014) How do you time your level-ups?

Always milestone or in dialogue with my players, always between sessions.

D&D General Probability, Critical Hits, and the Illusion of Importance

This. Even though my games aren't combat focused, the whole party still goes into cheering mode when the paladin gets a crit smite on the bbeg. And the opposite - when a big baddie slams a fat crit on the fragile cleric/rogue multi the party holds their breath while the damage dice clatter.

What are you reading in 2022?

I'm in the same camp re the Laundry Files. The early and mid books was amazing, the later ones is still enjoyable even though I wish the meta plot had taken another direction. And Charles Stross is a solid writer that always deliver. At the moment I've put my fiction reading on hold. I've been...

D&D 5E (2024) WotC is right to avoid the word "edition."

I really doesn't matter if WotC call it a new edition, .5 or some kind of neutral name with intended longevity. On forums such as this one it will still be a new edition, and edition war...edition war never changes.

    D&D 5E (2024) One D&d and alignment: new approach

It will be interesting to see any changes they come up with. For me, one of the core things that make D&D D&D is the possibility for philosophical concepts such as evil taking anthropomorphic shape in the physical world, for example as a demon. Hopefully they keep that, even if they change...

D&D General Poll: Do DMs/GMs need to trust their players?

I only play with friends that I of course trust. But I can't even imagine a situation where I have reason to mistrust a player and still be a good, fun and creative DM. So always!

    D&D 5E (2024) -5/+10 feats and their future.

My players are laid back regarding class balance etc, and I as DM isn't bothered by the -5/+10 feats. Yeah, it might be a bit powerful at low level, but then I just put a few more opponents in the encounter. But from tier 2 the nova madness begins anyway, so I just adapt the encounters towards...

    D&D 5E (2024) Inspiration change to reroll

I give my players Inspiration at the start of each session, and they can use it once in the session to reroll anything except damage. Kind of like a Bennie in Savage Worlds.

D&D 5E (2024) One D&D gets gnomes close to perfect

Raising our gnome overlords to a fluff and mechanical standard that befits their majestic greatness is both necessary and urgent!

    D&D 5E (2024) DM's no longer getting crits on PC's

Unless there is some epic scale system or balance changes, of course my NPCs and monsters will keep on critting.

D&D 5E (2024) What do you think One D&D will do to the VTT industry?

At the moment I use Beyond and AboveVTT for D&D and Foundry for everything else. From what we know OneVTT may well be based on micro transactions or suchlike, which makes it a hard nope for me. In that case I hope to be able to keep on using Above. If not we will play much less D&D and go with...

D&D 5E (2024) I am highly skeptical of the Unreal VTT

Softness is a curse, it stands in the way for true grognard grumpiness evolution! ;-)

    Banned Book Recommendation Thread

We don't ban books in my country. Yet. There are major forces here that want to go down that road though. But this is a great thread, go roleplayers! And huzza, I type this with light fingers, resisting the strong urge to hammer-the-keys-vent my frustration over book-banning madness in...

D&D 5E (2024) I am highly skeptical of the Unreal VTT

On the other hand, I guess a pretty substantial part of the online gamers are like me and my table - old friends that has discovered during the pandemic that VTT gaming save lots of time and car miles, so we can cram out more gaming time each week. And many of us older VTT gamers have jobs and...

D&D 5E (2024) I am highly skeptical of the Unreal VTT

Yeah, I've seen it. I try to view it as laughable and absurd, even though my brain at sleep time grind it as another major step toward a dystopian nightmare where we lease the right to breath air. But no politics, so let's go back to our grognardian skepticism about One D&D and the VTT :)
