D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Yes, but for the most part they are failing to recognize that attrition is still there in some form, even if it's minor. I'm sure they don't allow PCs to just walk forever without ever sleeping or even resting. I'm sure they don't allow unlimited casting of spells without tracking some sort of...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Fair enough. I think most of those on the attrition is bad side aren't in that same place, though. At least those of us in this thread. Are you also for unlimited spellcasting, or is spell attrition based on slots okay? What about hit point attrition throughout the day? Is that bad? Can...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Yes. Meaning that it's up to the DM, really. In my game it's the minimum allowed time between rests. Is it satisfactory to do it that way? No, not really. But it's better than 1) shoving 6-8 encounters into a 24 period in order to preserve game balance, or 2) letting the PCs walk down easy...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

This is very close, but misses the mark. Those of us on the "attrition is bad" side aren't actually saying attrition is bad. We're saying that the game math balancing encounters around attrition is bad. 1e didn't balance encounters around attrition, yet it still had attrition. The importance...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

The long rest variant isn't about recovery. It's about the adventuring day. Day 1: 1 encounter. Day 2: 2 encounters. Day 3: No encounter. Day 4: No encounter. Day 5: 2 encounters. Arrive in the city at dusk. Day 6: No encounter. Day 7:1 city encounter. Rest after having your 6 encounters for...

    D&D 5E (2024) Why doesn't D&D have fire arrows?

Because it takes a wizard! Level 3 Spell for 3.5e Flame Arrow: Arrows deal +1d6 fire damage.

Unearthed Arcana New Psion update, Dungeons and Dragons Unearthed Arcana

The 1e DMG just has Ego Whip on the chart of psychic combat. If you're unlucky, it can cause idiocy or the loss of a psionic attack/defense mode or discipline.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

I mean, if it were specifically enchanted to allow that, then sure. Absent such an enchantment, which the broom doesn't have by default(or it would be in the description), game physics take over as far as my game would go. I've never seen a reason to give magic even more power and ability...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Again, no. To be like special effects the abilities pretty much have to have no rules. Not just have a bit of vague wording that DMs can interpret a little differently.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

It's not. Special effects can attempt to mimic something like that, but special effects don't really have rules/mechanics like PC abilities, so they can do and get away with more.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

My PCs don't have the power of movie plot and special effects behind them. Harry can disagree all he wants. ;)

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

There aren't many who can afford those kinds of prices, and fewer that would want to spend most of their savings on one item. It's possible, but it's not like there's even an inkling of a solid magic item market. That and just because Wizard Monroviary is charging 110,000, doesn't mean anyone...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

There is no rule one way or the other, but I think it's more reasonable to think that someone is going to need to make effort to stay on a thin, moving stick. And given that it's moving a fair distance above ground, wise as well. Yep. Though I'd go with the carpet second. It's more...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

It's a mounted item that's thin and has no magic ability to keep you seated. There's no reason I can see to think that you could ride it hands free.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

It would be a tough sell because it would be boring. Which ones? Spellcasting is basically 500 features in 1. Wizard has the fewest I can think of, and it has. I'm using the 5e version since I don't have the 5.5e PHB. Spellcasting(dozens of subfeatures inside of it, so it's really not one)...

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

I agree with you in principle, but I'd buy the boots every time. Why? Because the broom has to be mounted. It's effectively a mount, which means you need to hold on to it like you would a horse. It's the size of a greatsword, which means you need to find a place for this extremely awkward...

They shelled out the gold for an Amulet of Filter Evasion. Not optimal, but fun!

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

Not if you stick with it. As soon as the players realize they aren't getting the best shiny version of everything they want and these random items are it, they start using them, because it's that or have no magic items.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I very much doubt that this will go over well. People don't want their already limited features cut down to 4 or less over 20 levels of play. So instead of having one thing to track, I have four.
