D&D 5E (2014) The Case for a Magic Item Shop?

In my last few 4e campaigns: Common items are usually available in larger cities without too much fuss, and the players can craft them freely. No extraordinary components or knowledge are required to make them. Uncommon items are created on commission, traded for, occasionally found in black...

    D&D 5E (2014) Dungeon Master’s Guide vs Monster Manuel

Manuel is kind of a jerk but I don't know if I'd call him a monster.

    D&D 5E (2014) [UPDATED] DMG - Villainous Classes Preview

As a lot of people will be coming in from 4e where characters and NPCs were built with drastically different rules, this is pretty important advice. Come off your high horse maybe?

    D&D 4E Recreating the 4e Avenger in 5e

Since I am playing an avenger in a 4e game, and the vengeance paladin isn't really a good fit for the class, I thought I'd try recreating 4e's avenger class as a rogue archetype. Here's the introduction: 5e Avenger (Rogue Archetype) Some religious orders have need of skilled, discreet...

D&D 5E (2014) Rise of Tiamat Supplement is online

The only item I think is problematic are the gauntlets of ogre power (assuming they will grant 19 Strength), since that score is attainable through normal means. It seems counter-intuitive that a strong warrior can put on magic strength gloves and get no benefit from them.

    D&D 5E (2014) Disengage Clarification

In the playtest, when you used Disengage you also got to move half your speed. That may be where some of the confusion was coming from. Edit: Should've read the whole thread.

    D&D 5E (2014) Legendary Resistance

This. Also like I mentioned in another thread, don't have the legendary resistance take effect until the start of the creature's turn, if possible. That way a couple of party members might get in a turn while they're able to take advantage of the spell effect. It will help soften the blow of...

Shamanism Domain for 5E Cleric: Critique Requested

With the Monster Manual out I'm going to be updating the language of some of the spirit's stats: Traits (General) Incorporeal Movement: The spirit can move through other creatures and objects as if they were difficult terrain. It takes 5 (1d10) force damage if it ends its turn inside an...

    D&D 5E (2014) D&D meets the Walking Dead

This brings to mind Arthas Menethil's story from Warcraft. He was a paladin commanding an army forced to fight against an undead horde. It turned out the entire town of Stratholme was infected and the people would soon turn into zombies. Rather than allow that to happen, he ordered the entire...

D&D 5E (2014) Legendary, Lair, and BOSS Actions

I like the idea of giving boss-type creatures the Lucky feat. For creatures with Legendary Resistance auto-saves, as a DM I'd probably delay the auto-save a bit. Maybe make it its own legendary action? That way if a PC tosses a big save-or-suck debilitating effect on it, one or two other...

D&D 5E (2014) The Case for a Magic Item Shop?

Personally, I'd add darkvision to the Dungeon Delver feat. That feat is pretty situational already. Adding darkvision would make it more generally useful as well as being thematically appropriate. There was a feat in the playtest which granted low light vision if I recall correctly, so it's not...

    A Little Help Here?

You see it all the time in sports, where teammates help each other stand up after diving to the ground, yet D&D rules never supported it. My group had this houserule in 4th edition (where being prone was fairly commonplace) and I thought I'd port it to 5th. Thoughts? New Action: Help Up If...

D&D 5E (2014) The Pendulum: Player Entitlement & DM Empowerment

As a DM, I feel that 4e empowered me. With its tight balance and codified rules I was fairly sure that no matter what the players brought to the table, the game would still run smoothly. I could focus on creating memorable adventures rather than pull my hair out trying to challenge the players...

    D&D 5E (2014) Here's a complaint about the 5e books...

Back in my day we made up our own page numbers and we liked it. We didn't have any of this premade auto-paginated crap. Kids these days, I tell ya. Oh, and get off my graph paper. PS: I agree.

    D&D 5E (2014) Concentration Query

For some reason this thread made me wonder if (as a house rule of course) two friendly casters could "trade off" concentration on a spell (grasping the threads of the magic weave away from your ally). Good use for an Arcana check. Of course the caster receiving the spell should be high enough...

Shamanism Domain for 5E Cleric: Critique Requested

Thanks. I have yet to do any playtesting with it, unfortunately. Hopefully the folks who are already using it in play can chime in eventually. I suspect it may be too durable at lower levels and too fragile at mid-high levels but don't have any evidence of that yet. I just picked up a monster...

    Attacks invalidated by interrupts

Interesting situation came up last week. I'm normally the DM, but I am on a brief hiatus from DMing with this group and another player is running his game. I am attacking with a daily melee power which has half damage on a miss. My attack hits. Enemy uses an on-hit immediate interrupt which...

D&D 5E (2014) Hex maps and dungeons and dragons.

I'm a fan of squares for combat maps and hexes for overland maps. We do go gridless for encounters that are expected to be brief, and have all through 3e and 4e. I'm fairly generous toward the players when playing TOM, so they are more than happy to trust me.

4e monster vault for me, although the 5e MM is quite good.

    D&D 5E (2014) Prestige classes in Next?

I think there's a place for additional high-level backgrounds for prestige orders, but want them to be fairly sparse mechanically like the standard backgrounds. Boons and feats serve well enough for the major mechanics that prestige classes, paragon paths, and epic destines used to provide.
