    D&D 5E (2014) What are the different 'tones' supported by 5e D&D?

I agree. D&D5e supports the very specific D&D5e style of fantasy, mainly because of system design and presumptions. One can twist and turn it a bit with player buy-in, but in the end it will still be D&D.

How Crunchy is Too Crunchy, For You Personally

Savage Worlds hit my crunch sweetspot. It’s there, but in the right places that make it easy for a GM to improvise and wing it, and the right amount of ruling-not-rules. As others have said, a high crunch system can be very playable with good VTT support. I also GM WarhammerFRP on Foundry and...

D&D 5E (2024) 2024 needs to end 2014's passive aggressive efforts to remove magic items & other elements from d&d

For me and my table d20 high fantasy style gaming includes a flow of magic items. To eliminate using encumbrance I always throw the party a bag of holding or two at session 0 or 1. For us no magic items means a different play style, and then we don’t use d20/D&D.

Do players want challenging games, with a real chance of death?

As a GM for a table of players that really enjoy and focus on the roleplaying and social aspect, and are adept at developing their characters, I try to keep the challenges reasonably tough but the deadliness low - since they invest a lot in their characters. In grimdark systems like WFRP the...

    D&D 5E (2014) Active Perception Check: 5e and Me

If I was short of time, came from rules-for-everything systems, wanted good premade adventures and had three permanent groups, I would try to convert the players to Pathfinder 2e. In my limited experience it is - after an initial learning hump - probably the least time and prep consuming system...

Which RPGs did you play in 2023?

This year I’ve continued to GM my weekly Savage Pathfinder city campaign. I’ve also done some WFRP4e one-shots as system and Foundry testing as prep for a campaign start next year. And I’ve said feck it to waiting any longer for the elusive SWADE sci fi companion, and started prepping for a...

What’s up with the late eighties glam metal look?

What Is Your Favorite Campaign Setting?

Usually, for me settings are more fonds and wallpaper for the actual gaming, I'm as happy GMing in Golarion as in Forgotten Realms. But the one setting that really matter and reflect gameplay is Warhammer's The Old World, I just love it.

Player Characters Doing The Dumb Things

I run mostly semi-sandbox campaigns in the systems I GM, and all campaigns are basically fueled by player characters doing dumb things, drawing wrong conclusions and - most importantly - thinking they are smart and clever when doing stupid stuff. It's an improv GMs wet dream really, since the...

The thought of switching VTTs is so daunting

I haven't checked in on AboveVTT in quite a while - what's the word on the future in relation to Wizards own VTT?

The thought of switching VTTs is so daunting

I don't do Pf2e, even though I really like the system for that specific game style. But I still must add that the commercial Pf2e adventure path modules for Foundry is the most luxurious and best implemented stuff I've seen. If I ever come into a life situation with zero prep time as a GM, I...

The thought of switching VTTs is so daunting

I use Foundry and am comfy with that. Now, there are a couple of game systems I'd like to play that are better supported on other platforms. But I'm a humanities guy that is very uninterested in the tech itself, am happy that I've come to grips with Foundry, and it would feel daunting to start...

Do You Play Subsequent Campaigns In The Same World

I run most of my fantasy in Golarion, there’s room for everything. Currently running a gangs- and politics-centric city campaign in Absalom using Savage Pathfinder.

What RPG do you most regret parting with?

My Runequest 2e collection, that died in a waterfilled cellar together with The Fantasy Trip, old Traveller boxes etc. May the books Rest In Peace.
