Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Yeah, there's definitely a concern about some of the things it does giving apparent short-term relief without actually fixing things. Whereas for contrast physical therapy and the prescribed exercises from it have literally fixed injuries I've had which simply were not healing on their own.

What are you reading in 2025?

A great example of how subjective tastes in art can be. I first sampled Jordon's WoT in a novella included in the 1998 Legends anthology, and it was enough to convince me that his writing was a waste of my time. I've really loved some long works, though, including LotR, Jonathan Strange & Mr...

What are you reading in 2025?

I still have my 1984 copy of Richard Erdoes' and Alphonso Ortiz' American Indian Myths & Legends, and it's pure gold. And one of the great things about it is that each tale specifies what tribe/people it comes from, where the authors heard it/got it from, and when.

The placebo effect is a thing, of course, but yeah. Chiropractic actually does real physical things, and certainly seems to help some people, but has a lot of practitioners making unsubstantiated and sometimes absurd claims about its effects.

AD&D 1E XP Value for Monsters?

Yes, I agree with the guess that "crush" might be intended as a catch-all term for monsters which constrict (snakes) or hug (bears and owlbears), and any similar future attacks. I think "continuous damage" at least is a clearer catch-all category. Including the Rock Python (B43)'s...

    D&D General Orcs are misplaced

It's helpful to remember that "Giant class" referred originally just to all evil monsters on the wilderness encounter sub-table labeled "Giants" in OD&D, and that it never had any explicit rationale in OD&D or AD&D. One could vaguely INFER that these are all monsters which commonly raid the...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I'm all for pedantry in general, but when you take it so far that you're completely misunderstanding (and insisting on that misinterpretation, even after explanations) the point of the thread...

Spoilers Hey look, there's a new Robin Hood show coming with Sean Bean as the Sheriff!

Breadsword on Youtube has a truly excellent video essay on the joys of Disney's Robin Hood and how and why more recent efforts have failed, due to misunderstanding the nature of the legend. Long, but very good.

AD&D 1E What does this (d8, d6) dice notation mean in the DMG?

Good question. I've used a d8+d10 table a couple of times, for a bell curve with a flattened middle (9, 10, 11 all equally likely at 10% each, 8 and 12 8.75% each, etc.) The AD&D Monster Manual 2 introduced charts using this combo, and linked them to monster frequency as follows: 2-3 very...

AD&D 1E What does this (d8, d6) dice notation mean in the DMG?

I met a few folks at a convention who were still doing it in the 2000s.

AD&D 1E What does this (d8, d6) dice notation mean in the DMG?

I've encountered a few gamers over the years who used a d10 paired with a d6 (for high/low) in place of a d20. I suspect that the practice originally evolved for the same reason Gygax talks about in that passage (the old icosahedron dice being numbered 0-9 twice, instead of 1-20), only d6s are...

Ken Burnside on how screwed Asmodee is

"Hyperborea" is not the same word or concept as "The Hyborian Age". Though obviously Talanian used the same ancient Greek word Howard altered, to evoke the feel of Howard's setting, it's not the same setting.

Gaming Cons Have Changed (I'm Old)

I remember it being a thing at the few conventions I attended in the 80s and 90s, and running into it again when I returned to cons in the 2000s. Individual event tickets/registrations in addition to the weekend or day badge.

Yup. Even walking a lot has huge benefits; jogging doesn't have to be much faster or more intense than walking, especially to start.

Just World Fallacy is a helluva drug. It makes the whole world seem much more reasonable, except of course whatever tragedies befall the believer personally, which are obviously exceptions to the rule.
