    D&D 5E (2024) Let's Write A High Level Adventure

I don't necessarily disagree, but I find it revealing that no one has actually engaged with the idea of actually breaking down what 16th level character can do in order to examine how one might design encounters that engage those abilities. All we have gotten is people complaining about how it...

D&D General XP: How Do You Like To Earn It?

What do you mean by this? I don't understand mixing milestone xp and individual awards. Isn't the point of milestone XP that everyone levels simultaneously?

    Shadowdark Shadowdark Organized Play?

Tangentially related: a regional con I am involved with is doing an honest to goodness tournament game using Shadowdark in the spring. I am super excited.

D&D General XP: How Do You Like To Earn It?

I really like the individual xp awards based on class from 2E. I mean, if I am being honest, I love most things about 2E. I just can't get anyone to play it.

D&D General XP: How Do You Like To Earn It?

I think fiat is required for the GM to control pacing.

D&D General XP: How Do You Like To Earn It?

Well, as a player, I don't want "chapters" and I don't expect pacing to be the purview of the GM (outside of things like con events). Player agency is key, and so as a player I want to know or be able to find out where the risks and rewards are, and decide with my fellow players what we are...

D&D General XP: How Do You Like To Earn It?

That must have an interesting knock on effect where certain kinds of players might self-nerf to make the encounters harder.

Best practices for easy-to-run modules [+]

I like these a lot. One little note, just because it bugged me: "They will wake and attack if touched" should read "They will all wake and attack if any of them are touched." I know the "Crowded" entry makes it clear, but I almost missed it on first read. I also like how this layout leaves a...

D&D General XP: How Do You Like To Earn It?

That just seems like "xp for overcoming challenges" with smaller numbers.

Nice. I had never seen those, but in retrospect I am not surprised that VtM had them.

How do you know which encounters your GM will award XP for?

D&D General XP: How Do You Like To Earn It?

As a GM, I tend to aim for "XP for overcoming challenges" aka giving XP for figuring stuff out and not necessarily having to fight or whatever. But as a player, i want to XP for concrete things like treasure and defeating monsters. And I want to know or at least have a clue as to the relative...

Natural 20/1 Crit fails and Crit successes, How do you handle them?

I generally avoid making "crits" too big of a deal. I will use the rules for them if they exist, but I try not to extend it to skill rolls in 5E for example.

D&D General XP: How Do You Like To Earn It?

This is a question primarily from a player perspective. As a player, do you prefer to get XP from finding treasure? Killing monsters? "Overcoming obstacles"? Identifiable Milestones? GM Fiat? There is a lot of nuance, of course, so feel free to comment as well as choose multiple answers in the...

    D&D 5E (2024) Let's Write A High Level Adventure

One thing I think we can do that would help is to examine what 16th level 5E PCs are capable of. Not so much to guard against those things, but to actually incorporate some of them and make them matter. I hate when high level adventures nerf characters of those levels just to "work."
