Yeah, bard is another I have a similar issue with, but in the bard's case it's due to having only 3 subclass levels. Level 10 should have been for the subclass to get that extra bit of flavour.

One of the issues I have with the rogue is how spaced it its subclasses are. Having to wait until level 9 for the second subclass ability is too long a wait for all of the rogue subclasses.

The blade cantrips made it feel a little more magical, but otherwise I agree that the EK felt a bit lacking until level 7.

Using the halfling as a ranger I think works as a quick way to get a ranger in the game, it has a lot of abilities that would suit a ranger for BX and you can always extend the levels out if desired instead of halting it at 8th level. I do kind of feel like I'd want to allow all weapons though...
