D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

Yes, I was thinking of Geoffrey of Monmouth's cambion Merlin. By druid, I suppose you mean in the D&D sense, referring to his notable shapeshifting ability. Technically, Myrddin Wyllt was a bard. Again, I'm not widely read in the genre, but I suppose Harry Potter would be the primary example of...

D&D 5E (2024) What’s the difference between sorcerers, warlocks, and wizards?

Warlock is 8th-level. Sorcerer is 9th-level. And Wizard is 11th-level. :) Serious answer: wizards are Dying Earth wizards. Warlocks are Elric of Melniboné. I'm not that familiar with Sword and Sorcery and can't think of a character that fits the Sorcerer archetype, but Merlin comes to mind.

(5.24 PBP) Vault of the Dracolich (IC) Redux

Terrin throws a javelin as he steps out from around the corner, beginning to round the wagon and attempting to deter the fanatic from standing near the portcullis. Javelin: 1D20+3 = [3]+3 = 6 As the javelin glances off the wall and clatters to the floor, Terrin travels between the stack of...

(5.24 PBP) Vault Redux (OOC) Fitz's Refresher

Yes, it sounds like you're imagining a grate that's smaller than the area they're standing on, whereas I was imagining it taking up the whole area. Thanks for the clarification. One more question, does the wagon provide cover?

(5.24 PBP) Vault Redux (OOC) Fitz's Refresher

I guess my question was more about whether they were standing on it. From the map and your prior description, I had assumed they were, and my question was meant to clarify that aspect of the fiction. Your response here, though, seems to call that into question as something that has not been...

(5.24 PBP) Vault Redux (OOC) Fitz's Refresher

Well, the NPC (DM) is strongly indicating the sewer is the way to go. @FitzTheRuke, do the oxen need to be moved to get access to the tunnel?

    D&D General Mixed Background

I like to randomize character creation, so I put this together about six years ago for my 5.0E games as an adaptation of the Secondary Skills table from the AD&D 1E DMG. The original table features a 15% roll twice result (which is replicated on my table), so my table also results in combination...

D&D General Why do people like Alignment?

I like alignment as an ingredient in the kitchen-sink medievalistic modern fantasy that is D&D, like having Vancian wizards and Tolkienian orcs. In this case, it's cosmic factionalism from Three Hearts and Three Lions and the Elric Saga which feature Law versus Chaos. I think the expansion to...

D&D General The Great Railroad Thread

FWIW, "The Provisional Glossary" over at The Forge has this definition: Railroading Control of a player-character's decisions, or opportunities for decisions, by another person (not the player of the character) in any way which breaks the Social Contract for that group, in the eyes of the...

(5.24 PBP) Vault of the Dracolich (IC) Redux

"Copper, we need to close the portcullis," says Terrin, as he begins moving past the goliath toward the storeroom, "and you're the only one who can do it." He pauses and utters a harsh sounding word as he places his hand on the goliath's shoulder, adding, "May this help you find a way to...

(5.24 PBP) Vault Redux (OOC) Fitz's Refresher

Yes, an ox-stampede would add some chaos to the situation if it can even be accomplished at all, but I think chaos is kind of Copper's thing maybe, so I've been trying to leave it up to @Leatherhead. Also, given what @FitzTheRuke has posted, getting the oxen to cooperate will probably take more...

D&D 5E (2014) Dispel Evil and Good cleric spell 5th level in use

The OP's example takes place during a fight with a dragon, so my responses assume the rules for combat are being used. You can enter a hostile creature's space if it's two sizes larger or smaller than you, but the special action being referred to is the Climb onto a Bigger Creature action from...

(5.24 PBP) Vault Redux (OOC) Fitz's Refresher

That's a good idea. I was trying to think of a way we could use the oxen. If it works, it could maybe buy us some time to get the portcullis down and disabled, which was Terrin's plan, but I haven't thought of a way he could execute that without getting himself killed. It looks like the whole...

(5.24 PBP) Vault Redux (OOC) Fitz's Refresher

@Leatherhead, Terrin doesn't have the ability to teleport, and I think Lorent is out of spell slots, but perhaps Copper could lower the portcullis and somehow render the mechanism inoperable while the rest of us get inside the storeroom and provide covering fire, and then use Cloud's Jaunt to...

(5.24 PBP) Vault of the Dracolich (IC) Redux

Terrin takes the opportunity of Rowlow staggering away and moves up to the open portcullis, tearing the mercenaries' badge from his shield, and presents the fountain-image emblazoned on its surface. As he incants in a jarringly rough language, the waters of the fountain seem to catch the light...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

I think it depends on the setting whether creatures that perform the function of minions in combat are part of it, but I'll accept they aren't part of your setting, so the mechanic isn't about representing things in your setting. Nor does the mechanic establish, develop, or resolve a...

D&D General [rant]The conservatism of D&D fans is exhausting.

That would be High-Concept Simulationism. If you're going to use GNS terminology, at least use it correctly. Just because you can describe play using the word narrative does not make it an instance of Narrativism.

D&D 5E (2014) Dispel Evil and Good cleric spell 5th level in use

I meant they aren't in the dragon's space just as you aren't in the space of the layers that support the road when you're standing on the road. Typically the space a character occupies begins at ground level, not below. The difference is the dragon's a creature, so you can't stand on it as if it...

D&D 5E (2014) Dispel Evil and Good cleric spell 5th level in use

After some reflection, although I might resolve the players' declared actions in a similar way to what I posted above, I really don't think the rules support characters taking actions while in free fall, so the exploit essentially wouldn't work as stated because once the PCs teleported to the...

D&D 5E (2014) Dispel Evil and Good cleric spell 5th level in use

I'm surprised no one has mentioned (afaics) the 4d6 force damage called out in dimension door that could arguably apply for attempting to teleport into a place already occupied by a creature, if that "place" were interpreted to be the space controlled by the dragon. Personally, though, like the...
