D&D 5E (2024) Rests should be dropped. Stop conflating survival mechanics with resource recovery.

I guess I'm more the opposite - I prefer the Short Rest class design. I'd rather have all Short Rest based classes, with Long Rests just for healing/hit point recovery to full.

    D&D 5E (2014) When Did 5E Peak Quality Wise?

On book quality, for me there's been a notable lack of first class material since 2014/15 - I'd rate the PHB & MM as first class, with XGTE adding most of the necessary stuff that was missing from the DMG. I don't see any stand-out adventures comparable to Red Hand of Doom say. Tomb of...

D&D General The Problem with Individual Initiative

You sound like Hussar. What is this players'-rights advocacy?!

D&D 5E (2024) Rests should be dropped. Stop conflating survival mechanics with resource recovery.

Tiny Hut is awful game design because (a) the Hut is so powerful, as written it's world/setting breaking, and (b) it's a ritual, so no resource cost. As written, if it were a level 6 non-ritual spell then it would fit in ok with the 5e power gradient. I think it's ok to have spells that skip...

D&D 5E (2024) Rests should be dropped. Stop conflating survival mechanics with resource recovery.

4e D&D Gamma World did that. Personally I didn't like the HP bar resetting to full after every fight, although that's how most video games do it. My own approach is to allow short rests as per 5e RAW but no more than 3 per day, and encounter checks during SR - best to find a secluded spot for...

D&D General The Problem with Individual Initiative

Yes, I saw this when I tried doing side initiative in 5e. I think this is why (eg) Moldvay Basic uses phases - every PC moves, then every PC missile attacks, melee attacks, and finally spellcasts. It's a lot easier for the GM to manage - to get the players to act - if s/he says "OK, everyone...

    D&D 5E (2014) When Did 5E Peak Quality Wise?

I'm allowing Tasha's in (only) my Odyssey of the Dragonlords game. There's a Twilight Cleric. My overall feeling is that Tasha's breaks the game balance of the 2014 rules, but does not break the game, IF you are running an epic or mythic fantasy campaign. I would hate it in my more swords &...

    Coming The Tales Were True!

Adventure in the fantasy folktale England where you might meet Morris dancers at one turn and the Frog Prince at the next. The Tales were True – A Magical 5E Folk Tale Based Supplement for GMs and Players Alwion is an alternate version of the British Isles, encompassing what we know of as...

M.A.R. Barker, author of Tekumel, also author of Neo-Nazi book?

Also, Lovecraft was racist, and apparently REH chided him for his pro-Hitler views, but he didn't join Der Bund or otherwise take part in organised attempts to advance Nazism. Barker did - after the Holocaust was well known. For me, Barker's activity was way beyond any common or garden racism...

M.A.R. Barker, author of Tekumel, also author of Neo-Nazi book?

Yep, 100%. I think maybe some Americans confuse standard American racism, with Nazi ideology. The two are very very different.

D&D General Using Dwarven Forge in Owlbear Rodeo or other VTTs by SlyFlourish.

I like isometric maps on VTTs a lot, but I think using abstract tokens with realistic terrain creates a bit of an Uncanny Valley effect. Tokenised photos of miniatures (at least head & shoulders) might work better though.

    D&D 5E (2014) When Did 5E Peak Quality Wise?

I think Xanathar's was the peak, definitely better than the 5e DMG; although as an Indian Summer I did like the Essentials Kit box set. WoTC adventures and settings were never good compared to the better 3PP stuff, their monster books after the MM were mediocre, and Tasha's made clear they had...

Absolutely right. A set encounter only becomes Illusionism when it triggers no matter what the PCs do.

I guess my feeling is: bad player + bad GM. I can see these appearing on Youtube as D&D Horror Stories slanted either way. I wouldn't want you to GM me, but I wouldn't want to be a player with these guys, either.

The Five Geek Social Fallacies as advice, yup.

D&D General What is the worst piece of DM advice people give that you see commonly spread?

I was certainly surprised by how bad that book was. There was a lot of bad advice on Youtube during the 4e era. A lot of you "You should do..." videos followed by "My game was a disaster!" videos - from the same author. It tended to centre around what Alexander calls "My Precious...

D&D General What is the worst piece of DM advice people give that you see commonly spread?

Yeah. Any advice that a GM has failed if not every player enjoyed every moment of every game. Conversely the best advice I've seen was Noism's advice to players: "You are responsible for your own orgasm".

D&D General What flavor of D&D has the fastest combat?

B/X and clones, and 0e and clones, probably edge out 1e/2e AD&D, but all those are very fast compared to 3e/4e/5e.

D&D General Ben Riggs on how to make D&D a $1 billion brand

If WoTC put in anything like the effort of serious RPG companies like Free League, Paizo, Kobold Press, then they would make more money I think. So much of the WoTC stuff is astoundingly low effort, piggy backing off brand strength. The quality difference between WoTC stuff and the best 3PP...
