I guess? But it just seems so much like a gamble: first you need to get a Spellcast roll off; if you do its 1/long rest; and then you need to assume no movement to the fight or put it where your backliners are, and then you need the adversaries to roll high for it to make a difference to...

How about a Symbaroum adventure? Alas, I lost all my WOTC rewrite stuff when I disable my Legendkeeper subscription.

Another little thing: if the author wants to convey their idea of a situation (a room, an environment, a moment), give us 3 senses of descriptions. Tell us an interesting sound, a compelling scent, maybe even a touch. “You see…blah blah blah” only goes so far. Plus the more sense cues you give...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

Threats to the Nentir Vale did a great job of driving this bit home. So many factions in there that can be used to run an entire Heroic tier campaign.

Yeah, something simple and consistent is nice. For a more narrative side, I like how Carved from Brindlewood stuff tends to format the NPCs connected to various situations. One thing they do is a single "quote" that a) hits at what relevance the NPC has to the situation but also b) gives you a...

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

I mean, this is the joy of a properly hyperlinked PDF.

GMs: What is your prep to play ratio?

Yeah, having to do VTT map selection for Draw Steel! has changed my prep time and requirement a lot recently. I didn't miss that, but at least the combats are fun to make up for it.

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

I was just reading some reviews of the newer Enemy Within modules where the reviewer was lamenting the lack of flow-charts showing expected party progression and where events trigger others etc. Even if you dont want to drop down to dungeon-key style writing, modules with complex parts should...

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

Seriously. Have you read through any of the modules some of us have pointed out in this thread? When I ran Winter's Daughter for my 5e group, the entirety of prep was uploading the maps to the VTT and lightly reworking the backstory and a couple of names to fit the setting I was using. The...

Critical Role Tell me the selling points of Tal'Dorei / Wildemount, without mentioning Critical Role, Matt Mercer, etc.

The default of the setting is "War Has Broken Out, here's the ramifications and how players can get involved." To do otherwise is presented with "if your players don't want to deal with that, here's some thoughts." It's very much not how the setting is built. The War permeates the entire gazette.

Ok, so using a level 7 PC with leather and nothing else special going on, vs the basic damage spread of a T3 enemy (3d8+3), 68% of the time Zone of Protection does literally nothing (the overall damage output is already at the Minor threshold and thus -1 to -6 does nothing). This is even worse...

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

I run a large number of games where there's basically no prep required for deeply engaging and exciting gameplay. One thing I really like about a lot of the better OSR stuff is you can skim through the rooms / NPCs / tables and go "whoa" and immediately start getting excited about seeing how...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

It's a WOTC published setting, especially where the Wildemount book has been added on to and fleshed out for publication. Mercer may have started that, but there's a lot more contributing authors on it. Yes, the pantheon comes from 4e (this is good?), but the world itself as you'll play in it...

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

Again, Exandria does this, especially Wildemount. It’s why I think it’s the most “5e” of extant WOTC published stuff.

    D&D 5E (2024) WotC Should Make 5.5E Specific Setting

@Reynard you asked about Exandria, there was a thread about that recently. I think it's the most 5e / current play culture WOTC official setting to come out, and the Wildemount book in particular is actually quite good. My specific bulletized list walking through some strong points is here.

Questing Beasts' review of the FR campaign setting's little encounters suggested this as well, yeah.

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

That’s more likely going to be caused by images than page count. FWIW, the 302 page PDF spread of Stonetop’s Book 2 is 26mb inclusive of plenty of simple black and white images. I’ve run ~170 hours of gaming directly from fractions of the total content in there with occasional jotted notes; and...

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

Red Hand of Doom is basically a Front in D&D before AW even released. It’s a wordy in places and needs a little work but is so much better in overall format and usability then basically everything I’ve seen for 5e, while providing more meat then most 4e adventures.

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

You don't present the long form background prose within the like keyed location / at-the-table content though. You do a hyperlink, page number reference, etc that brings you back to the longer stuff. Or you have a section of "stuff the PCs can research/learn" that's separate again. It's funny...

Just for giggles, here's the current Miro board for my Tuesday game 5 sessions in. I love how well this tool works for online gaming from an organizational and transparency perspective.
