GMs: What is your prep to play ratio?

@payn just reminded me that I hadn't counted work done on basic campaign support for my VTT of choice (Maptool), which probably adds some to what I quoted, though it tends to be somewhat frontloaded.

    RPG Evolution: The Rolling Frontier

Trying to set up this sort of thing can be interesting, but its also hazardous in that the stakes can seem consistently too high to the players.

    Hours actually playing RPGs, non-D&D?

I easily blew past the largest category, as we play every other week for 7-8 hours. I'm not sure when in the last two decades I'd have said less than 150 hours, and that's probably being seriously conservative (there were years I easily played twice that being involved in a game every week)...

GMs: What is your prep to play ratio?

Hmmm. There's definitely some system variance here--a game with a wide variety of broadly usable standard opposition will reduce the time because I can just plug-and-play those, and more detailed games tend to require a bit more prep time, as will games that are more structured and less...

What are you reading in 2025?

Its been out since March, but I don't think I heard of it myself until about June.

D&D 5E (2024) If D&D 2024 Had Been Radically Different, Would You Have Stuck With 5E

How do you feel about people who were not 5e players at all, but might have given a genuinely innovative change at least a look (this happened to me back in the 3e days, after all)? It doesn't seem to directly answer your question since I wouldn't have been coming from a position of already...

What are you reading in 2025?

Finishing up "The Folded Sky", the third of Elizabeth Bear's Whitespace novels. I've found I've enjoyed them a lot more than I would have thought, and its kind of interesting hitting a series that's set in a common setting but otherwise not strongly interconnected.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

If someone thought it was in the mirror, how would you even know about it? They'd just quietly reflect on the problem. As such, its survivor bias; the only problems you're liable to hear about art the ones projected outward.

    AD&D 1E Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play 1E AD&D? How Was/Is It?

I do have to note that how similar the BECMI games are to OD&D is a matter of perspective. Ask someone who started out in late '75 (and thus post Greyhawk) where races were treated like classes or not for example, and you'll probably get some pretty varied answers (this largely being because...

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

Templates are, indeed, a good solution, but you need to almost present them as a default; if you just put it in as an optional tool, most people aren't going to use it for just that reason.

    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

Well in terms of that, if I wanted more grounded fantasy I had lot of (to my POV) better choices.

    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

Its a fairly common feeling for one reason or another. I pulled the plug as a GM at level 14, not out of preference, but practicality.

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

It might be worthwhile to look up a game called Everyverse sometime; it takes a tact in its handling somewhat like that (rolling it back even farther).

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

While I agree with the first half of what you say here, once you have people who are used to any free-build system, they're no more likely to have decision paralysis here than in any game with decision-based character gen. The only real problem you'll run into (and this is especially true with...

What is/are your most recent TTRPG purchase(s)?

Just got my copies of the Fragged Kingdom 2e PDFs, and the Beta version PDF of Outgunned Superheroes.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I have the advantage I only read a limited subset of threads here, and I suspect a lot of those are about thing going on in threads deep in the 5e discussion.

    General video game discussion

There are problems with MoM mechanically (the diplomacy sysstem is garbage, and some top end units are just too good) but the biggest problem for people who didn't play it when it came out is the graphics are, to be generous, primitive.

    General video game discussion

I've been doing XCOM1 with the Long War mod for a while now. Lot of nice things about it (though I'm literally playing the easiest version of the eight levels) but it drags out the end game which has always been an issue with those in general.

    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

I dunno, I still say in terms of management, it wasn't that it was high level it was that everything had to be represented with separate, individualized class features or feats. I know of games that play in the same power levels as 4e or 3e D&D that are much easier to manage than those were...

    D&D 3.x Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play 3rd Edtion D&D? How Was/Is it?

Even when they do, there was a lot of room for decision paralysis there.
