D&D General Weave Your Tale in the Forgotten Realms With 8 Epic Subclasses (D&D Beyond Article)

That's not entirely accurate. This is from the 5e Paladin. "Although many paladins are devoted to gods of good, a paladin's power comes as much from a commitment to justice itself as it does from a god." That's a 50/50 split between the oath and the god, so about half comes from the gods.

It is really a thing. It's just not mechanically a thing for the most part.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

No. The number of encounters has no bearing on whether or not they have allies within range. I don't know what you mean here.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

The answer to that first question is maybe/sometimes. Other times fleeing might be the best option.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Yeah. If it's a week, many more will have allies within range. Instead of some having allies they can get to in time, it will be a lot of them that have allies that they can get to in time.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

1e MM says goblins could have slings and spears. 2e goblins say that they use spears, maces, and short swords. 3e goblins have morning stars and javelins in their stat block. 5e goblins? No reason for them not to have access to ranged weapons. Especially since the rules say the DM can arm and...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Yes they do. Part of the monster rules is the DM can give monsters whatever weapons he wants them to have. It's not like goblin minions will explode if they don't have the example weapon from the stat block.

D&D 5E (2024) There is sauerkraut in my lederhosen: Snarf's Guide to Using (and adjudicating) Skills in 5e

That's not bad mechanically, but it still doesn't make a lot of sense to me. One book just wouldn't have enough in it to reliably grant advantage. You'd need an Encyclopedia Britannica set on hand for whichever knowledge skill you are using.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

That's a different problem. A lot of people don't shift gears at higher levels, so issues arise. The 5 MWD, though, starts at level 1 if the DM just sits his world in stasis while the group rests.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

It's nowhere near most. As long as it happens sometimes, that's enough to keep the players from engaging the 5 MWD.

D&D 5E (2024) There is sauerkraut in my lederhosen: Snarf's Guide to Using (and adjudicating) Skills in 5e

I'll chime in as another DM who has degrees of success. I also started using success with a cost for narrow failed rolls, though I do like @Parmandur's d6 idea. I'm going to have to think about that one for a while. What I don't do, is just have success with the roll determining cost...

D&D 5E (2024) There is sauerkraut in my lederhosen: Snarf's Guide to Using (and adjudicating) Skills in 5e

Wow. I very strongly disagree with this. The idea that you can't know anything without a book in your hand is doesn't make any sense. A PC wizard should be able to look at some magical phenomenon and not need a book(tools) in order to figure out what it is.

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Yes they can. Perhaps these scouts/hunting party/whatevers have a village close by with wargs to ride back very quickly. Sure they can. They may or may not have more of them close by. No, but he can go and ask his two stone giant friends if they would come back and take care of some pesky...

D&D General Settings of Hope vs Settings of Despair

Perhaps they could figure out a way to alter the creature created to destroy the cancerous dungeon growths and make into a creature that changes the cancerous dungeon growths into regenerative beacons. Create enough of them and the world could reverse its downward spiral.
