First Episode of The Mighty Nein Available Now on YouTube

Yeah. I think CR leads the charge of 5E feeling like fantasy superheroes in a fantasy superhero world. Is it me or is Sam’s Nott voice different? I’d imagine he doesn’t want to keep doing that gnarly voice he used in the live play. Especially after the throat cancer. Jester makes everything...

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

Information density as in more information per page, right? That’s an argument for bullet points and clipped descriptions rather than large paragraphs you have to dig through to get to the buried tidbits. Consider a 250-page module for $50 that could be easily summarized and converted to a...

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

Our priorities are dramatically different in this regard.

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

This touches on another thing I’m finding a lot of in modules, overly wordy descriptions of motives and justifications, plots and schemes, etc. Give me a terse explanation of what the baddies are up to and why. Tell me what they’re going to do if the PCs do not intervene. And give me some...

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

Present it twice and have a good editor. Page count is irrelevant in digital forms. If you’re dealing with printed material, you can simply provide a digital download free to those who already purchased the print version. Simple problem, simple solution.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

The pointlessness of talking with some people in two parts. Part 1. "It's great that the industry is catering to your tastes. It would be great if more than like six people in the industry catered to my tastes." Part 2. "How dare you attack me like that?! If they make anything for you that...

For anyone curious, the terribly bland intro music should be this banger of a song instead. Massive spoiler after the 1 minute mark.

OSR Modules with the best layout & presentation

But it is how prose writers present room descriptions. It is also how a lot of directors, especially horror directors, will present things in a movie. Long, lingering shots on the table and food only to slowly pan up to reveal Dracula.

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

Bizarrely, WotC might have partially lead the way here with some 4E modules. The one I remember most for this was Dungeon Delve, an adventure anthology. The layout and information design was focused on ease of use at the table. Open the book, take 5-10 minutes to read the setup, gather...

[Old school] I can't deal with inventory

Yes, that’s true. However, the core of the problem is that the referee controls what spells the wizard has access to in those older games where the problem originates (TSR-era D&D). So without the referee handing out spells like candy, there is no LFQW.

Check out the OSR/NSR modules then. Most by Necrotic Gnome fit that bill. As does Waking of Willowby Hall.

Modules: Made to Read vs Made to Run?

I’ve been looking at a lot of modules lately and something quickly became glaringly obvious. There are two broad categories of modules: those meant to be read and those meant to be run. Now, of course, those meant to be read are also eventually meant to be run by some fraction of buyers, but...

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Yeah. Even within geek spaces there are, unfortunately, ridiculous hierarchies. Raiders look down on regular pve players. Pvp teams look down on pvp battleground players. Etc.

[Old school] I can't deal with inventory

It’s one of those things that I like the results but hate tedious paperwork involved to get there. I like that encumbrance rules can maybe eventually push hard choices about what to keep and what to toss in dire circumstances. That can be tense and fun. All the paperwork required to maybe...

[Old school] I can't deal with inventory

Linear fighter, quadratic wizard. It’s what people call Monty Haul refereeing when specifically applied to handing out wizard spells like candy.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

I wonder if MMO players give people who play single-player games the same kind of side eye that group RPG players give solo RPG players.
