Yeah. I completely agree. My point is that while 3e standardized energy types and assigned "force" to Magic Missile, in AD&D it was just magical energy and was not necessarily force damage at that time. It could have been any type of magical energy, or no type at all.

You seem to be conflating what @mearls seems to be saying, aka Xanathar's, Tasha's, etc. with 5.5e which are the new changes to the core books, some of which seem to have been changed for the sake of changing enough to get people to buy the new books.

I think background does influence stats, but not to the extent 5.5e does it. They should have +2 for race and +1 for background. So a soldier probably has +1 to str, and an elf would have +2 dex. So an elven soldier would be +2 dex, +1 str.
