    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

I did say there were exceptions. Savage Worlds has always had some metacurrency, but most of its rules, like those of most traditional games IME, are simulative of something real in the setting. Most of the time, that's what I want.

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

I see all traditional games as having a simulationist drive as part of their make-up, even if it isn't the most important thing. Most rules elements look to simulate something that exists in the setting of the game, not in the meta layer, and rules in the meta layer, above the setting, are...

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

Not sure what you mean by the difference, but assuming you mean why I have a problem in traditional games but not otherwise, I guess it's a "no peanut butter in my chocolate" thing. I like traditional games. I like (to some degree and only a few examples) games with metacurrency. I don't...

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

I have to agree. I dislike metacurrency on general principle on most games, because it feels like I'm being asked to leave my PCs point of view for the sake of the "story", and I generally don't want mechanics that operate on that level anywhere near the players. I will note that there are a...

OSR Fallen Elphame and the Halls of Knowledge

Sounds great; wish I could play it with you. I strongly recommend using the Without Number fusion you spoke of as your engine. It's OSR style works well with the megadungeon concept, and it has the genres you need well-established. If you have access to it, the excellent Monster Overhaul has a...

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

But if the rules don't matter when you don't want them to, then why place any value on what's in the book versus what isn't? We can always stipulate that you can change the rules whenever you want (and I think we should), but if that's the argument, then there's no point in talking about the...

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 5th Edition Is Coming in 2026

Ok, but "streamlining" is another way of saying, "simplifying".

    Makes sense to me.

    GURPS 4th Edition Revised Announced

I have to ask: is there a driving need to always follow the cultural zeitgeist? And by this I mean that I think SJG is doing the right thing with this revision, as opposed to a new edition as you suggest. Small updates, mostly to visuals and some language is all that they should do IMO. GURPS...

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 5th Edition Is Coming in 2026

I do wish that not every new edition of every game didn't make a point to talk about how much they've simplified the system.

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

Best play would have avoided a single PC not designed for solo melee hurtling into combat alone, which would have probably prevented the other characters from getting themselves killed too, so I'm going to have to disagree.

Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 5th Edition Is Coming in 2026

I picked up all the 2e books in pdf from a Humble Bundle a while back.

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

Yup. I can't see another explanation. The whole thing seems self-inflicted at least to some degree.

That 1e cover is very memorable, almost as much as the chaos spawn so many of my PCs devolved into!

The Many Faces of Roleplaying: How ‘RPG’ Became Everything and Nothing

I'm not saying lore and story aren't appreciated (they very much are), but the mechanics are IMO far and away what most RPG supplements are going to be used for in terms of reference. That's hard and valuable work and shouldn't be discounted.

I mean, that's the core of what you need for hard utility. Don't sell yourself short!

Level Up (A5E) Removing Pointless Death (+)

Yeah, I really don't understand the context under which the wererat event occurred. What was the reasoning for making the strike at all, let alone how it was done? Seems to me the rogue put themselves into a very disadvantaged position, and then the party followed suit.

For the record I have no issue with text readability here.

    GOD RULES: Player's Guide (5e) Previews/Discussion

These are wonderful! Really looking forward to picking this up once it hits DriveThruRPG (not in a position to back the Kickstarter at the moment).

    Golden Ages of Gaming

Well, there has been talk of using the comic book model to determine what Age is what. The 80s are pretty early in TTRPG history, so I can imagine seeing it as the Golden Age. To my mind that model makes it the Silver Age though. Golden Age would be mid-late 70s to very early 80s.
