D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

I think a contributing factor is the lack of a middle ground when it comes to PC resources. 4e has powers that can be used at-will, per encounter (or technically recharged on a 5-minute short rest), or per day (recharging on an 8-hour long rest). This means you have some bread-and-butter stuff...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Not so much different versions of D&D no, but probably by doing different RPGs – e.g. a modern, paranormal, and/or sci-fi game. That would almost certainly bring more sales in absolute terms, but likely not enough to justify the expense. I'd be very proud of 5.0 as a whole, but there would...

WotC Wizards hiring D&D Creative Brand Manager

Given Wizards' history of layoffs, I'd be very hesitant about uprooting my life in order to apply for a job there – particularly on the D&D side (MtG seems to offer more stability). If you're already in that general area it's probably a great job, but I wouldn't leave a current job for it, or...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Because long-term, satisfied customers lead to more customers. The questions then become: how many more customers? And how much effort (=money) does it take to provide said satisfaction? And is the result worth the effort? There's also the matter of personal pride on part of the designers...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

First time I encountered a system like that was actually in a TSR game: Advanced Marvel Super Heroes. You wanna buy something, make a Resources check. If the item has the same Resources rating as you, you need a yellow result (fairly hard). If it is 1-3 ranks lower, you need a green result...

    Fabula Ultima general thread [+]

I think this part requires some nuance. This all sounds like the default mode of FU is some sort of sandbox/hexcrawl kind of thing, which I don't think is true. Ideally, you will still have grand villains making grand plans and heroes becoming wrapped up in those plans... the difference being...

Crunchy Tactical RPG like 4e/pf2e but for Urban Fantasy?

Savage Worlds can be crunchy if you want to play it that way, and Jodi and Clint Black are working on a "Fey in LA" setting over on Patreon – a setting using the Supers rules to play various fey in 1920s LA.

You don't. You mainly don't have strategic magic like that except as class features or magic items. For example, a 3rd level (out of 10) Void elementalist gets: Conduits (~clerics) with the Nature domain can gain this at level 4: But that sort of thing is separate from your combat powers.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

I have a vague recollection of a similar mechanic being present in original Diablo. Something along the lines of being able to mend items yourself in a dungeon at a cost of permanent durability, or having the blacksmith do it in town at the cost of money.

D&D General Weapons should break left and right

The problem with wealth-by-level in 3e and 4e was that this wealth directly correlated with personal power by way of magic items. 13k gp (level 6 WBL) gets you a +2 stat booster (4k), +1 armor (1k), +1 saves (1k), +1 weapon (2k), and +1 deflection (2k) plus assorted bits and bobs like a wand of...

    AD&D 2E Edition Experience - Did/Do you Play AD&D 2E? How Was/Is It?

I'm not saying 3e was anywhere near perfect, but at least it was consistent in its complexity. (And don't forget how that mass bull's strength could give people anywhere from +0 to +3 to damage, depending on whether they already had an enhancement bonus to Strength as well as what sort of weapon...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

10 minutes for a combat seems extremely fast for anything that (a) uses a battle map and (b) is more interesting than "there's an orc in the room and he's guarding a pie." But I understand that that's about the level of sophistication the design of 5e was based around – that's why 5e usually...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

Yes, it's subjective, but considering the number of people who aren't playing it with 20 rounds of fighting per day I think I have some support for my thesis. I think part of the issue is also that the default starting level for 5.0 was 1, and at level 1 you absolutely can't handle 20 rounds of...

D&D 5E (2024) Mike Mearls explains why your boss monsters die too easily

True. That doesn't make it a good choice, though. Attrition-based adventuring was an issue back in 3e (which had a similar set of assumptions, though based on a 4-encounter adventuring day), and was less of an issue during 4e due to short rests allowing partial refills (so you could bounce back...

It's not an issue in the same way that a hole in the floor in your home isn't an issue. I mean, you know it's there, and you can easily maneuver around it, even in the dark because you've been living in the place for a few years. But for someone who's new to the place and might be distracted by...
