Your favourite world narrative / mythology twists

In ancient times a group of priests and magi worked together to create anthropomorphic races in the image of their gods. (Egyptian). These races rebelled against their creators and brought down the high culture and advanced society to a previous hunter gatherer level. These races then turned on...

How Do You Enjoy D&D Away From the Table

While going to and coming home from work I plan in my mind the lives of my various NPCs.

Let's talk about your homebrew world!

The classes in my world can be described as Divine, Arcane, Mundane and Nonpareil. Your character is the sum of all your chosen backgrounds. For races we have Dwarves, Elves, Faeries, Gnomes, Halflings, Humans on the "light" side, while the "dark" side has Bugbears, Giants, Goblins...

How often does your party take a short rest?

As applicable as per the situation at hand. Once my players had to stop a ritual from being performed that gave the army which was attacking their home city an advantage. Most of them rode off to a ruined keep where the ritual was being performed. Upon arriving the group split. One group...

An Acquired Taste. (D&D Cheeses, Wines and maybe Cars.)

This is the cheese my players fear, all colours of the rainbow. Though perhaps not so much the azure one in the corner.

D&D 5E (2014) Middle Earth and aSoIaF martial campaign

You could go to the Talislanta website and look at the most recent edition in the library. It is easy enough to use the paths as a base for a class. You have many military and thief paths that can be adopted.

Anybody actually play a Redemption Paladin?

Once I played a paladin who was about peace and salvation. To end a war she married a cambion necromancer. The bard at the time thought it would be cute to compose a ditty "The laying of Elenestil" After that the other party members thought it would be heroic to nullify the wedding by...

    D&D 5E (2014) What's so great about Elminster?

In our game Elminster represents every named NPC my players want to best in some way. When they first met Harold Halfman owner of the Wyvern Wing Inn they were expecting a dwarf. They did not expect a human who is missing part of his left arm and leg, left ear and left eye and covered with...

DISCUSSION: Have you ever had to boot somebody from a game?

I had one player self eject himself out of every group in the local game shop. In one of my campaigns he was playing a paladin, the kind of paladin that states he is LG Do-Right Pureheart yet acts like a CN (insert colourful metaphor) when it comes to roleplay. In the campaign the group came...

Centaurs - Seeking your thoughts on a homebrew race

MechaPilot, do you have penalties for entering buildings and other structures? I would imagine that a centaur would not have a nice time climbing a narrow winding stairwell in someone's tower.

D&D 5E (2014) How To Faithfully Convert Campaign Settings.

Zardnaar, when converting older material, particularly that which is tied to films and or novels do you have the problem of someone saying "That was not in, did not happen, is not part of the film/book"? Or having a debate happen because someone tries to change an aspect of the tied in film or...

I hate death saves. Propose your solution.

I have adopted the idea of negative HP. Each character has 10 + their starting HP negative points that they can "operate" under to seek aid, healing, play dead, escape, or attempt an action that does not involve the use of a weapon. If they have specific training or are enraged they can continue...

Session time and level advancement (ie, how many hours gametime for a level)

I recall a letter in Dragon magazine (Leomond's Tiny Hut) where it was mentioned it should take two years of real time to reach seventh level assuming playing 8-12 hours one weekend a month.

Best Non-RPG Gaming Sources of Minis/Terrain

For trees and such we have used model railroad scenery. Also some of the model buildings are medieval in appearance and can be used to make village maps.

Gritty Campaigns. How you play one?

We use critical hits and fumbles in conjunction with weapons skills. Without the appropriate skill a natural 20 is a critical which does 2x damage, a 1 is a fumble. With an appropriate skill 20- the skill level naturally rolled is a critical. If a 1 is rolled you roll a d10 if the result is your...

    New Campaign needed

I've had success with using aspects from the various Neverwinter Nights computer games. Either 1 or 2 with any expansion, you have maps, npcs, etc... ready made for you to insert as needed. Perhaps something from them will be of use for you.
