    Our Physical Fitness

Thursday night I got in a good hard session. Three circuits of dumbbell bench, inclined curls, and skull crushers, with drop sets on the bench and curls, three sets of overhead shoulder press with drop sets, and three sets of face pulls. Had some good tricep and upper back soreness...

D&D General How Much D&D Stuff Is There Anyway? Part 1: Editions

You can run any of the total numbers through this to get a ballpark estimate: https://www.bls.gov/data/inflation_calculator.htm Though equating that to another currency obviously complicates matters, because exchange rates vary.

Great work! A ton of fun to review, and nice visualizations alongside the numbers.

D&D General The rapier in D&D

I largely agree, although we know that Gary and co were very interested in history, but also limited in what books they had access to in part due to limits of the local library when they were first writing. For example, I understand that his use of Charles Ffoulkes' 1909 Armour & Weapons...

If you want to get persnickity, 1e uses "sword, long" in the PH weapon tables, uses "long sword" as two words everywhere else in the PH, and uses all three forms in the DMG (though I'll concede the two word variation is most common). :) Good observation.

D&D General The rapier in D&D

True enough, but this whole conversation is about rapiers in the context of D&D (and other D&D-like games, which might indeed give different stats to a rapier vs a smallsword). Which requires categorization for purposes of rules, making it in that way more similar to HEMA and its needs than to...

D&D General Odd Speak with Dead Question

Yeah, I used to see that kind of problem-solving get a lot of discussion in the AD&D days. And ways for assassins and such to work around raise dead, like taking away part of the body, or inserting a long thin needle into the brain at the base of the skull and concealing it under their hair...

I think she's pointing out that weapons labeled "rapiers" by experts existed in the 15th century. Whether those weapons are mislabeled in your opinion gets into more subjective territory.

OSR How to make dungeon crawls interesting

I think Overgeeked's use of "kick in the door" may be informed by the default expectation in OD&D that doors in dungeons are always stuck (for intruders) and must be forced. Obviously other games don't necessarily have that expectation. Probably a good time to link d4 Caltrop's OSE Encounter...

D&D General The rapier in D&D

Historically a longsword is a term for a sword primarily wielded with both hands, usually 4'+ in length. Filippo di Vadi wrote that the total length should come up to the wielder's armpit. The grip/hilt is long enough to easily accommodate both hands (for example I'm looking at a 51" example...

Spoilers What do people get wrong about Tolkien?

Yeah, faking his own death and living that wild party lifestyle for another 10 years is definitely part of why he's such a legend. I appreciate the "almost" hedge. I don't think we could call Farmer Giles of Ham or Leaf by Niggle epic fantasy, and of course he wrote a lot of poetry, though I...

Random encounter rolls or just Colville-style "orcs attack!" are also reasonable solutions. But yeah, the combo of real time torches + how much encumbrance torches take up in SD is definitely a solid solution.

D&D General The rapier in D&D

In the original 1974 rules everything did a d6, but variable weapon damage showed up in 1975 in Supplement I: Greyhawk, and has always been popular. 1977 Holmes Basic also uses d6 damage, and technically variable weapon damage is also an optional rule in 1981 B/X. Some OSR games do damage by...
