Ken Burnside on how screwed Asmodee is

"Hyperborea" is not the same word or concept as "The Hyborian Age". Though obviously Talanian used the same ancient Greek word Howard altered, to evoke the feel of Howard's setting, it's not the same setting.

Gaming Cons Have Changed (I'm Old)

I remember it being a thing at the few conventions I attended in the 80s and 90s, and running into it again when I returned to cons in the 2000s. Individual event tickets/registrations in addition to the weekend or day badge.

Yup. Even walking a lot has huge benefits; jogging doesn't have to be much faster or more intense than walking, especially to start.

Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Just World Fallacy is a helluva drug. It makes the whole world seem much more reasonable, except of course whatever tragedies befall the believer personally, which are obviously exceptions to the rule.

"You meet a mysterious stranger in a tavern." Origins?

I don't think I know of an example in Howard or Leiber's work. In The Tower of the Elephant Conan hears about the titular tower in a tavern, as I recall, but it's not a mysterious stranger giving a quest. I'll have to ponder on it further, though I'm curious what other people come up with.

    Our Physical Fitness

Up late at parties Friday night, but got in Saturday afternoon for a good session. Three sets dumbbell inclined curls with drop sets (slowly making progress), four sets Smith inclined barbell bench with drop sets on the latter two, three sets leg extensions with drop sets on the latter two, and...

OSR New edition of OSE in 2026 (updated with some links)

OSE has multiple different versions. The boxed sets split the rules into several small sub-books, so you could do things like hand the casters the book with the spells while the ref still has the book with the monsters and treasure and so forth. Advanced OSE is already primarily available in...

    AD&D 1E Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play 1E AD&D? How Was/Is It?

Sounds like you had a copy of 1974 OD&D's Men & Magic, then, and memory is playing tricks. It's done that to me.

What Bit Of Fan Fic/Edit/Theory Made a Thing Better or even GREAT For You?

We stretched it out for quite a while, yeah. Most of a year of play; I also added more "meat" to the Averoigne section using the Goodman OAR for Castle Amber.

What Bit Of Fan Fic/Edit/Theory Made a Thing Better or even GREAT For You?

I used and really enjoyed this fan edit of the Averoigne quest section of the classic module, Castle Amber. It makes it so the time travel potion is actually used rather than just being a McGuffin, and it simultaneously makes it so that the PCs are deliberately traveling to when each...

Same. Scraper and shovel live in the car. It's just a question of whether they're currently residing in the trunk or on the floor of the back seat.

    Our Physical Fitness

Got in last night after work despite the rain and cold. Four sets of Smith inclined barbell bench with drop sets on the latter two, three sets of narrow grip lat pulldowns, drop setting on the latter two, and three sets of machine rear delt flies. I've been thinking that the Smith barbell...

    AD&D 1E Edition Experience: Did/Do you Play 1E AD&D? How Was/Is It?

That makes sense with the timeline. Holmes Basic and the original hardcover Monster Manual were both released in 1977, the AD&D 1E PH in 1978, and the DMG in 1979. B/X didn't get released until 1981. Perhaps you were playing with a group which was already playing OD&D using the 1974 rules...

TBF, that's what OSE Advanced already is. It's already a Player's Tome and a Referee's Tome.

OSR New edition of OSE in 2026 (updated with some links)

Yeah. I never had an issue with dropping the damage bonus in OSEA, because it was so obviously overpowered next to other classes like the Fighter. But I can imagine how NG might want to bring it back, maybe in a reduced-power form (+1 damage per three levels or something, instead of EVERY...

OSR New edition of OSE in 2026 (updated with some links)

Right. In OD&D Rangers got a bonus against all creatures of the "Giant class (Kobold to Giant)", which meant everything on the wilderness encounter Giants sub-table, between and inclusive of those two entries. That is, Kobolds, Goblins, Orcs, Hobgoblins, Gnolls, Ogres, Trolls, and all Giants...
