Yes, DDB was originally a third party project with a license from WotC. It was owned first by Curse and then by Fandom. Later, it was bought by WotC and brought in-house. After a while, WotC decided to merge DDB with its general D&D website.

That module (which I agree is really terrible module) has nothing to do with Gygax. It was a parody of Castle Greyhawk and it was published several years after Gary had left TSR.

I obviously have no opinion on the legal side, but I agree with you that it is a very sad story. Unfortunately this kind of episodes seem to always have been present in the RPG world, right from the start.

The d3 vs 2 issue does not seem to me a burden at all. It gives a little variety while maintaining overall balance. Presumably, each player will run one character at a time and since this is something that happens every turn, I think that it will be easy to remember.

Yes, that struck me as very weird to me as well. They want to build a factory for manufacturing their for-profit goods and they ask for a donation? In exchange you get a brick with your name on it? Very weird, but everyone is welcome to spend their money as they wish.

Just an anecdote, but that's exactly how I got into D&D. Back in 1985, I received the Mentzer "Red Box" for Christmas, I read it, ran through the solo adventures and then I began to DM for a group of friends.

Of course it depends a lot on the situation, but this set is stand-alone, while you need the DMG and the MM to play. Further, if this is well done, it will teach new players in a quick and efficient way. Learning D&D from the PHB can be challenging, IMO.

Yes, the original Starter Set was a great product and the adventure is outstanding. I was less enthused about Dragons of Stormwreck Isle and even less about the Stranger Things starter set.
