I'm currently playing in a 5e 2014 campaign which should end in a couple of months or so. I'm also playing in an AD&D play-by-email which has been running since 2007 and is still going strong.

How does it present itself? Is it an intro to D&D for beginners? A way to capture back old lapsed players? A way to try something a little different for current players? Something else?

This is a good point. When I started with D&D, I already read a lot, but when I jumped into AD&D (a few months later), it was only available in English. My knowledge of the language improved quickly and I learned a lot of vocabulary, although I used to joke that I learned the word "dweomer"...
