    Player skill vs character skill?

The other side of that coin is the eloquent player who used CHA as their PC’s dump stat. Do you let them charm and beguile NPCs or do you limit their character to their character’s stats? Then there’s the question of the smart player with the dumb character. “Your character wouldn’t think of...

    Player skill vs character skill?

Tangent from another thread. A reoccurring theme of trap discussions (and many others, if we're being honest), is where to draw the line between player skill vs character skill. So that's what this thread is about. Where are your lines on player skill vs character skill? Everyone's different...

    Should traps have tells?

    Should traps have tells?

Of course. But traps don’t have to be perfect to be effective. Also not every single trap is going to be so badly made that it provides a tell. Seems to be a lot of excluded middle here: “The only possible way a trap wouldn’t have a tell is it’s perfectly made.” That’s obviously not true...

    Should traps have tells?

Sure. There are some circumstances where that absolutely works. Traps that are old, not well maintained, abandoned, etc. But that's not all traps. In an active lair with trap-setting monsters, there's not going to be any reasonable in-fiction reason for traps to have tells. So we're back to...

Friday Chat: What Mechanics Do You Steal From A Game To Use In Another?

Clocks, Countdowns, and Fronts from Powered by the Apocalypse, Blades in the Dark, and Daggerheart. Such a simple and elegant idea. Removes so many convoluted subsystems and saves so much space. Mothership’s Death Saves. Absolutely brilliant take on the idea. Like so much in Mothership. When...

    Should traps have tells?

From a game perspective, yes, of course traps should have tells. These are games about choices. Without choices to make, traps are just time/resource sinks. From a verisimilitude perspective, no, of course traps should not have tells. Traps are placed to scare, harm, and hinder people. Giving...
