    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

The thing to remember about role and power-source is that they are guidelines and not mechanics, as they were in 4e. Power source informs what shared lists you will draw from, and "role" informs what features and techniques you get. But they are not be alls or end alls. As for classes, we also...

    D&D 4E 4e-style Roguelikes

Hey guys, I was wondering if anybody knew of any roguelike games out there that kind of played like 4e? It seems rather easy to make one, if one approaches it from the right direction.

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

On Minions: I like to take a lot of my inspiration from movies and scinima. One one hand, I like the idea of minions being more threatening and taking two hits to kill. On the other hand, it is not only realistic but also a trope in film that most adversaries go down in one hit. I like what we...

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

That, or let on that they are minions right from the start. Maybe a DC 15 wisdom check could do the trick to say "these guys are weak/inexperienced, and a solid hit should take them down." That way, there is no expectation damage.

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

Greetings all! With the combat chapter complete and ready for revision, it means that the rest of the game can be written. Please feel free to contribute in any way shape or form. Write, edit, or critique either here or in the document! Even simple encouragement is nice!

    Epic play

I think that in any encounter, taking a hint from videogames is good advice: If you defeat the boss, the encounter is over. Either the other enemies route, never to be seen again, or the energy blast given off from the giant lich exploding from your awesome kills the others. The other enemies...

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

What we have going down thus far is it looks like all classes have unique techniques, but may choose from a shared pool of techniques for which they qualify, such as one based on their power source. I plan on using that as the core mechanic of certain classes, in fact; the bard, who dabbles in...

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

Back from Dragon*Con, and with a vengeance! The Basic Rules and Character Creation sections are effectively complete. The next chapter to be done is the combat chapter, and then the rough framework for the adventuring chapter, which I hope, like the OGL Index, is edited by GMs based on their...

    D&D 4E 4e psudeo-retroclones

So, as we all know, 5e is coming. As most of us know, people use the OGL to make retroclones of previous editions - gutting certain rules and mimicing others to recreate one's preferred edition of the game. With the Continuation 4e Manifesto, it has come to my attention that many retroclones...

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

As was suggested earlier, the 13th age sounds incredibly helpful in the war-efforts!

I had the same thoughts. Glad we agree. :)

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

Ultra crazy idea. What if spells did not have set damage, but were varied based on the implement used, like weapon attacks? Each implement family would have different traits, and may even (akin to superior implements) would vary based on material used, or something like that. So lets say we...

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

Cool, I am glad we are on the same page. Speaking of quick and dirty, here is the google doc. If you want to edit it, you have to have that link. I have some other things to do right now, but there is that for if anybody wants to work on it in the mean time.

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

Might I again reiterate that this was written from a 3e -> 4e perspective, and not the revers? These entries are what are to be published as "OGL" as rule variants. The OGL says that one has to disclaim which parts of the published material are Product Identity, and which are open. As such, I...

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

I think you are correct, on the whole. Maybe it would be a cool feat to be able to replace your second wind with a feat-power, or something like that. Anyway, I decided I would go ahead and upload what I have so far. Mind you that there are errors because of reasons. But most of it should come...

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

In reguards to healing surges and second wind - I think you guys are both right. What I have right now looks a lot like the healing surges system we know. It has been renamed reserve surges, and you only get 4 + your con mod. Now, I had been giving thought to second wind, and thought it would...

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

I think that is correct, and it consumes approximately about "20% if the party's resources." The other thing to consider is how much enemy difficulty just needs to be upped by virtue of the disparity in 3.5 and 4e racial, class, and theme features. Also there is a disparity in assumed ability...

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

I think you mean "Should," but of course that is just semantics. ;D Another thing that just occured to me was monster design. Race and classes seem pretty easy to work under the new system, but how about monster-building? I figure naming monsters for roles and giving them level advancements...

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

I did some research just now. The OGL states that one must have the Which means to me that we should check to see what 4e-style things already exist in the SRD, and what does not (this is what OSRIC did), and completely gut what we do not desire, and use/modify/add what we do. After a few...

    D&D 4E [Continuation 4e] - a manifesto

Good points Grey. (Can I call you Grey?) Though I do not believe that any WotC published material uses the GSL. Since they own the brand, they would not need to publish under their own licence - at least that is my understanding (we need a real lawyer). My thought is that we do not need to use...
