Shatter specifically states that the spell works on nonmagical items only. Yes, Akos knew the armour is magical, so he'd probably know Shatter wouldn't work. Roll a DC 10 Spellcraft check. If your successful, you can choose a different action.

Shatter cannot affect "functioning" magical items. Post removed after player's successful Spellcraft check.
