    One thing I want to avoid, though, is having the players afraid to engage ANY monster. There are reasons they will need to fight the big bads, so they need to feel confident enough that they can win even these battles at times.

    One of the Heroic Abilities allows you to increase HP, but you do have to wait until you "level up" a skill to 18. I'd argue that Dragonbane characters are more powerful at the beginning and it evens out as they progress. Power min/maxers can still do some things, but it won't be as ridiculously...

    Right, I meant if your character had 12 HP max. Good point on not recording negative HP in all other cases.

    Characters can still be pretty great if they use Initiative well, plan judicious use of parry, and remember to use their Heroic Abilities. Strategy also is a huge help.

    I'm giving beginning players an extra Heroic Ability to start (their choice, as long as it makes sense for their background), and a choice of one professional skill raised to 15 if all their abilities are less than 15.

    Sorry if I’m being off the cuff, but I do think you need to solve the power gamer vs the reasonable system puzzle. The Dragonbane Heroic Abilities can still make up for some of the power game needs but I also think maybe fudging a bit in favor of the players for awhile until you find that middle...
