Let's Talk About Supers RPGs (Especially Ones Good For Cons)

I finally landed on the game series I want to run for RPGCon in Marlborough MA in April: C list supervillains (something like the Flash's Rogues Gallery) just trying to score, while avoiding both superheroes and the higher tier villains trying to force them into their diabolical plans. These...

D&D General Hope and Fear In D&D

Instead of having x per short rest, you just pay a hope to use it. That's probably too general a rule because some short rest abilities are more powerful than others. If you are using DH's spotlight rules instead of D&D's initiative system, I don't think that works. The problem with Hope in...

D&D General Hope and Fear In D&D

So if you wanted to use Hope and Fear in D&D, what about powering short rest abilities with Hope and using fear to power monster recharge abilities plus the usual initiative thing? Would 5E mostly as written work with Daggerheart's initiative/spotlight system?

D&D General Friday Fun: What Are Your Top 3 Playable Species

I do not recall anyone ever playing one in one of my campaigns pre-5E.

D&D General Friday Fun: What Are Your Top 3 Playable Species

I have never had a player whose tiefling character was such an outcast. I think people mostly like the aesthetic.

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

For my own part, I don't usually use a torch timer (though I still "attack the light") nor do I use always-on initiative (because it is a PITA). But I adore it for lots of reasons, not least is how eagerly it incorporates weird fantasy.

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

Just to be clear, I don't have a problem with SD being the "5E lite" it seems to be, or people hacking it in all kinds of way. That is cool. it just occurred to me randomly that the whole "torches, darkness, death around every corner" bit is not actually the core of what makes SD popular.

Dunegons are definitely important, as you can see by each Cursed Scroll (since there are always dungeons in addition to the exploration stuff). I would be interested to hear what you think is "shadowdarky" about Spelljammer.

    Shadowdark Shadowdark General Thread [+]

This is from a recent email update from Arcane Library: ---------- "2025 was a BIG year for The Arcane Library and Shadowdark: There were 84 crowdfunding campaigns for third-party Shadowdark projects (more than any RPG other than 5e)." ---------- I love Shadowdark. it is great fun. But I...

Unfortunately, while I love the aesthetic and vibe of Numenera, I am not a fan of the system.

I mostly meant incorporating gear, monsters, etc from different games. I like my science-fantasy to be WEIRD.

Help Me Pick A Convention Game To Run

One idea I had a while back for a con game is a far future science fantasy portal fantasy, where the PCs keep (as in, each slot) finding themselves awaked in the Gamma World/Wizards/Dying Earth era, having been summoned forward in time using their cryo-presered bodies. Except that it is Now, and...

    Running Shadowrun as a Western?

"It has Native Americans in it so it is a western!" is a pretty powerful indictment of genre fiction and pop culture. Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show has a lot to answer for, even 100 years later.
