    Dumb Game Ideas: Mash-Ups

I'm not sure how that would look too different than Mad Max now, except for the Doof Warrior being able to summon demons...

    Dumb Game Ideas: Mash-Ups

What are two (or more) genres, IPs, setting or otherwise that you could, would, or even have mashed up together to create a campaign or adventure? I really want to do a Delta Green style modern technothriller, except the squad (PCs) is making sorties into Oz. Or, War of the Worlds but set in...

Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

I personally find it more fiddly than helpful.

WotC D&D Beyond Reveals 'Partnered Content' Schedule

I'm getting flashbacks to how 3.5 destroyed the 3rd party 3.0 supplement library.

Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

I was kind of forced to get better at pacing because I run a lot of convention games. Not only do you have the usual time limit (4 hours, but often a notable portion of that is spent onboarding folks) but people who sign up for con games almost always want a "complete experience". There are lots...

D&D General D&D Evolutions You Like and Dislike [+]

I wonder what percentage of folks do that, as opposed to sticking with D&D forever or just leaving the hobby altogether.

But if you WANT a good tactical engine, 5E is going to disappoint.

D&D General D&D Evolutions You Like and Dislike [+]

I thin k that is because D&D (especially 5E 2024) is trying to be too many things at once. It is a tactical turn based combat game, but not a very good one and is outclassed in that regard by Pathfinder 2E. It is a neo-trad story forward game, but not a very good one and is outclassed by...

Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

Because what I am saying is that when you play an RPG, you are generating a story. That's different than trying to "play through" a story in the same way you might in a linear video game.

D&D General D&D Evolutions You Like and Dislike [+]

I have answered variants of this question a bunch of times in the thread so far. Short version: the story is what happened at the table, not what IS happening at the table. That is all I am saying.

Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

Notably missing from the above is a discussion of "the fiction" and "in character" -- which I appreciate. While it is common to play RPGs that way, it isn't actually necessary. A player is not required to inhabit their character in order to play an RPG. Nor is the GM required to put on funny...

Uh oh. Warforged is slipping and boring old Tielflings are climbing.

    Draw Steel General Thread [+]

Alright, I want to make a concerted effort to learn DS well enough to run it at least once and get an honest feel for whether it is for me. Help me get there. What is the best set of introductory videos? What is the best actual play? What other learning resources are out there? Thanks.

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

There's no accounting for the particular peeves of a designer. Think about all those kinds of Pole Arms and yet there was just one "mace."

Let's talk about "plot", "story", and "play to find out."

I'm being specific because that is my position, not because I am trying to force anyone to think that way. Discussion boards are for discussing stuff, after all. I totally agree that RPGs are full of "story things" that make them fun. And I know that people use "plot" in its broad, common...

Daggerheart Sold Out in Two Weeks, Has Three-Year Plan in Place

Sure. Why not? I am sure there are some monsters in there whose physical or magical attacks have (potential) additional effects.
