5E: Monstrous Arthropods for Fifth Edition

Y'okay, presumably we're basing this off the AD&D female Culex and Anopheles stats from Polyhedron Magazine #67 (January 1992). Those are a lot tougher than I'd have statted them. They're XP 975 or 1,400, suggesting female Giant Mosquitos are nastier than the XP 650 AD&D Giant Scorpion, which...

5E: Fifth Edition Monsters Inspired by Third Edition Sources

That said, I do have Giant Mosquito on the list of giant arthropod possibilities, so we might as well stat that one up too!

5E: Fifth Edition Monsters Inspired by Third Edition Sources

Might as well finish what we started. A simple solution is to just use the Giant Imperial Dragonfly as the CR 3 entry, since we've already statted it up. Then we'd only need to change the note to: * The exalted thrall's giant insect spell can transform up to ten locusts, five wasps, three...

5E: Converting AD&D Monsters to Fifth Edition

Updating the Efreeti Firelord Working Draft. There's still a couple of questions. First, how much damage? It should be relatively modest, since it's for removing effects rather than inflicting injuries. Perhaps 14 (4d6) fire damage? Secondly, are you happy with it being an at-will or would...

5E: Converting AD&D Monsters to Fifth Edition

Updated the Efreeti Firelord Working Draft. Next on the list is Purifying Pyre, how about this: Purifying Pyre. The efreeti firelord chooses a point within a space occupied by one creature or object within 60 feet (it can target itself). A 10-foot-radius sphere of rainbow colored flames...

Majin's Temple of Elemental Evil conversion 1

Majin posted a conversion of T1-T4 The Temple of Elemental Evil to third edition on the thread T1-4 Temple of Elemental Evil 3.5 Conversion Complete! that he added to Resources but the original ZIP folder has gone AWOL, possibly during one of the several server reboots we've had. I thought I'd...

5E: Converting AD&D Monsters to Fifth Edition

I'm not overly fussed either way. Guess it depends on whether we're scaling it on the 60 feet of a typical Adult Dragon conical breath weapon or the 90 foot cone that Ancient Dragons go for. Hmm, I suppose the approx Challenge 20 of the Firelord is more in the Ancient Dragon range (CR 20 to...

So how strongly attached to a 90 foot range are you?

5E: Converting AD&D Monsters to Fifth Edition

Somehow I suspected that's what you'd say. I'm not amiss to making it 90 feet if you're particularly keen. Am wondering about tweaking the "blossoms into an inferno" wording to "erupts in an inferno." The original used "blossoms" because I was cribbing heavily off the SRD description of fireball.

5E: Converting AD&D Monsters to Fifth Edition

Okay, let's figure out the details then. Might as well do them in order. How's this: Invoked Inferno (Recharge 5–6). A point within ## feet of the efreeti firelord blossoms into an inferno. Every creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point is affected. The inferno spreads...

5E: Converting AD&D Monsters to Fifth Edition

Hmm, how about if the concussive option actually causes concussion. Like a CON save or be stunned for a bit? Updating the Efreeti Firelord Working Draft.

5E: Fifth Edition Monster Variants Inspired by Fourth Edition Sources

Well they both have the trait of becoming more vulnerable once they're "sated" on blood. Let's see, what else is there… The AD&D Vampiric Mist has a complicated blood feeding mechanism. At full strength it has 24 hit points (the maximum of its 3 Hit Dice), but it loses 1 hit points for every...

5E: Converting AD&D Monsters to Fifth Edition

Good-oh. I'll swap the name in the next update. Okay, I have three rough ideas for Actions: Invoked Inferno (Recharge #-6?) maybe resembles a metallic dragon's breath weapon or high-level spell?  Concussive Blast: CON save, does bludgeoning and fire damage, perhaps smaller targets that fail...

5E: Converting AD&D Monsters to Fifth Edition

Updating the Efreeti Firelord Working Draft. I tweaked the Multiattack from "or hurl flame" to "and hurl flame." Incidentally, I was tempted to change the action Flaming Punch to Incendiary Fist 'cause it sounded a bit cooler. Well, not literally cooler – you know what I mean!

5E: Fifth Edition Monster Variants Inspired by Fourth Edition Sources

Okay, so it's the Blood Mist and Crimson Death Mist to do. To recap, we were aiming to make both of them monstrosities, and have the Blood Mist be a weakish monster based on the "living vapour" Vampiric Mist while the Crimson Death is a way more powerful creature like its earlier edition versions.
