D&D 5E (2024) Jeremy Crawford: “We are releasing new editions of the books”

We have known for a long while now that '2024 Player's Handbook' and '2014 Player's Handbook' will be the official messaging. Sure, Paizo just showed how it is done with much better communication about what is happening, but for the majority of folks in 2024, D&D will be what they bought at the...

Pathfinder 2E What does Pathfinder lack?

Yeah, both versions of Ashen Frontiers (Pathfinder and 5e) will have the four results system: (5 or more & 0-4 for 5e, since bounded accuracy keeps 5e's numbers down). And I'm doing Proficiency Without Level by default in Pathfinder, to make sure that the setting is appropriately dangerous for...

Paizo Posts New Draft of ORC License

If I understand dbolack correctly, they're concerned that taking several normally uncopyrightable concepts ('roll a die', 'compare against a number','success is based on the comparison') and combining them in a novel way might not be protectable if other ORC content appears in the product...

    Ashen Frontiers May Patreon Articles

Hey just a quick note... Patreon now offers free trials, and I've made the Everything (Pathfinder and 5e) tier for Ashen Frontiers eligible. So if you're looking for piecemeal stuff for your home games, material to play an old Dim Solar adventure module, or just want to check out new stuff for...

TSR The Full & Glorious History of NuTSR

It looks more wizardy than gianty. Probably a Wizard Giant. Carrying a giant sack of fertilizer.

    D&D 5E (2014) Quittin' Time

Yep. I think that too many of us are dedicated to that 'endless summer' ideal of a campaign lasting forever, and that's not very likely when you get older. I'm planning a summer mini-campaign for my son, his cousin, and their friends. It will have a clear time limit --- I'm running the main...

Pathfinder 2E Ashen Frontiers May Patreon Releases

This month's articles are up on Patreon now! Backgrounds 1 provides four of the twelve backstories that you might choose for a hero of the broken world. Each provides some benefits like training in Skills, and a specific Feature. But most important are the Qualities. A Quality is one thing...

Pathfinder 2E What does Pathfinder lack?

I think it is best to use the systems already present in Pathfinder to represent advantage. Even a +2 can turn a success into a critical success, or a critical failure into a regular failure, and that can be very significant. Imposing new rules on rolling just for the setting is likely to cause...

D&D 5E (2014) Free League's 5E-Powered Lord of the Rings Game Is Now Available

There are arguments to be made that even bad news makes good publicity, and that D&D is seeing a major bump from the movie, plus the coming anniversary. I believe all of that is part of the froth, along with Critical Role moving away from 5e likely after their current campaign. So, could it be...

Pathfinder 2E What does Pathfinder lack?

Yep, I started out with translating 5e advantage into a +5 circumstance bonus. Now, most of them are +2 status bonuses instead, with +5 circumstance being reserved for those sort of oddball PC-specific rare cases where I feel it is the best way to handle the translation.

D&D 5E (2014) Free League's 5E-Powered Lord of the Rings Game Is Now Available

I don't think we will see a fundamental shift in the system for at least another decade and more likely two. It seems like 2015-2020 was the high point for D&D in terms of market capture, and every executive will be aiming for those (inflation adjusted) numbers. And with Wizards seemingly having...

D&D 5E (2014) Free League's 5E-Powered Lord of the Rings Game Is Now Available

Experience shows that interest in 5e Middle-earth increase interest in bespoke rules systems, not reduces it. And, not to harp on one of my mainstays, but the 5e system is not D&D. The SRD has little to say about how you gain Experience, nothing about Inspiration, and precious little about how...

Pathfinder 2E What does Pathfinder lack?

Thanks all! I've begun work on a rules doc for Pathfinder, to solidify a few things now rather than wait on what may (or may not) appear in Remaster. I've also found that I am much better off doing initial rules development in Pathfinder and finding a way to hack that into 5e, rather than the...

Pathfinder 2E What does Pathfinder lack?

Yep. While I've been part of the teams for some really well known games like Age of Sigmar: Soulbound, Ruins of Symbaroum, Adventures in Middle-earth, BEOWULF: Age of Heroes and others, I've never done a setting or core rulebook start to finish by myself. And, so, after some medical scares last...

Pathfinder 2E What does Pathfinder lack?

I hear you. It's a big shift. The optional Proficiency Without Level will be standard in Ashen Frontiers, so Trained gets +2 only for a skill, Expert +4, Master +6, etc. So numbers are a bit less crazy, and GM's can choose whether or not to include monster levels when designing an encounter to...

Pathfinder 2E What does Pathfinder lack?

If you are new to Pathfinder after the OGL kerfuffle: what do you miss about 5e? What would be something that a setting product could offer you that would feel like something Pathfinder doesn't yet have?
